Just last week, the pioneer of all boy bands, New Kids on the Block, announced they are reuniting after 14 years. With that announcement came a flood of memories from junior high, high school, perhaps even elementary school: the posters, the shirts, the dolls and yes, even the hotline.
During their 14-year hiatus, we saw the rise and fall of other boy bands: Backstreet Boys (http://www.1037theq.com/iplaylist/artist/199819/), N’Sync (http://www.1037theq.com/iplaylist/artist/291150/) and 98 Degrees. So it’s natural that after 14 years, your knowledge of the Boston boys might be a tad rusty. Brush up on your New Kids trivia with some helpful tidbits and become a true Blockhead once again.
The New Kids were a dream of Maurice Starr’s, the force behind New Edition (http://www.1037theq.com/iplaylist/artist/5014/). He auditioned 500 boys and Donnie Wahlberg was the first one cast. Mark Wahlberg, Jamie Kelley and Donnie’s former classmates Jon and Jordan Knight and Danny Wood joined. Jamie replaced Donnie’s brother Mark (who later went to hang out with a funky bunch) Joey replaced Jamie, after he proved he lacked the discipline.
Their second album, Hangin’ Tough produced classics such as "Please Don’t Go Girl (http://www.1037theq.com/cc-common/ondemand/player.html?program=vod&track_id=14998)," "Hangin’ Tough," "You've Got It (The Right Stuff) (http://www.1037theq.com/cc-common/ondemand/player.html?program=vod&track_id=14852)", "Cover Girl (http://www.1037theq.com/cc-common/ondemand/player.html?program=vod&track_id=14935)," and "I’ll Be Loving You (Forever) (http://www.1037theq.com/cc-common/ondemand/player.html?program=vod&track_id=15438)." They became the first teen act to have five top 10 hits from a single album.
Jon Knight dated pop singer Tiffany (http://www.1037theq.com/iplaylist/artist/5656/). The singer invited the boys to open up for her on tour but soon after, she opened for them!
Their original name was Nynuk. No one liked it.
They have five multiplatinum albums, sold over 70 million albums and grossed more than a billion dollars.
