IRVING, Texas -- Ray Sherman and John Garrett were hired Wednesday to be assistants for new Dallas Cowboys (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=dal) head coach Wade Phillips.
Sherman, who has been with eight other NFL teams the past 19 seasons, will be the receivers coach. Garrett, the brother of previously hired offensive assistant Jason Garrett (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=2600), will coach tight ends.
Sherman spent the last two seasons coaching receivers at Tennessee after serving on the staffs of the Houston Oilers (1988-90), Atlanta (1990), San Francisco (1991-93), the New York Jets (1994), Minnesota (1995-97, 1999), Pittsburgh (1998) and Green Bay (2000-04). He was a college assistant for 14 years before going to the NFL.
John Garrett spent the last three seasons coaching receivers at the University of Virginia. He previously coached in the NFL for Cincinnati (1995-98, 2001-02) and Arizona (1999-00).
Jason Garrett is expected to the offensive coordinator, though Phillips hasn't confirmed his title. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones hired Garrett to the staff after interviewing him for the head coach vacancy before Phillips replaced the retired Bill Parcells last Thursday.
On Tuesday, Phillips added his son, Wesley, the quarterbacks coach at Baylor, and former Cowboys linebacker Dat Nguyen (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=4735) to his staff. They were given titles of "quality control" coaches, the younger Phillips for offense and Nguyen for defense.
