It was a beautiful city to live in. Michael and Elizabeth Beckham moved here with their four children, Katelyn, David, Kyle and Alyssa. The reason they moved here was because of Elizabeth’s job. The city had a lot of old, beautiful buildings. At the end of their yard, you saw a beautiful lake. The previous owners have left the Beckham’s five different boats, with no charge. Their house has many rooms. Each child had their own room with a walk-in closet. Their rooms were all rather big, and the master bedroom was the largest. Off of the bedroom is a very large bathroom. In total, the house has seven bathrooms, 3 guest bedrooms, a den, indoor pool, Jacuzzi, game room, living room, dining room, basement and a huge kitchen.
Michael’s new job would not follow him to the new city. He has decided that he would start his own company from home, and take care of the kids since it was summer time. Elizabeth started her new job as a secretary two weeks after they moved there. Being the oldest child, 17 year old Kyle decided to get a part time job at the local grocery store as a cashier. Thirteen year old Alyssa would baby-sit their next door neighbors. Nine year old Alyssa and 6 year old David were just kids, and would play outside all day. Michael was always checking in on Alyssa and David to make sure that they were okay. The family became a great family in their neighborhood. The four kids quickly became friends with the other children in the neighborhood. Michael and Elizabeth loved talking to their new neighbors and getting to know them very well.
People always saw the Beckham family really as happy. The truth was they were not. Michael had become very abusive to the family. He made Elizabeth, Kyle and Alyssa do everything when they were at home. They could be very tired, but Michael would always make them clean. The house was always spotless. Everything was put away so neatly. If any of the kids toys were laying out, they were to be grounded for a week at the most. Michael always made his family seem like they were happy around their neighbors, but they really were not happy anymore. David would cry himself to sleep. Katelyn would always make sure that her little brother was okay. Alyssa was never really home due to the fact that she baby sat the neighbor children and was with her new friends shopping. Kyle had picked up many extra hours at the grocery story that he worked at.
One night when Elizabeth was sick and in bed early, Michael came into the bedroom and started hitting her. She was cried help, loudly. Since Kyle’s room was right next door, he quickly ran in and tried to hold his dad back. “Get off me!†Michael screamed at Kyle. But Kyle did not listen. He held Michael back, while Alyssa called the police. Kyle eventually got Michael into a room with nothing in it but a bed, closed the door, and locked it from the outside. Then he and Alyssa went to the master bedroom to comfort their mother. Alyssa had told Katelyn to let the police in when they came. Katelyn understood and kept David happy.
When the police were in the house, Kyle was asked what had happened. Kyle said, “My mom said that she was going to go to bed early because she wasn’t feeling good. I was sitting in my room on the internet chatting with old friends. The next thing I heard was ‘Michael! Stop hitting me! I do not feel good!’ So I quickly came in here and held my dad back. He told me to let go, but I didn’t. Finally I got him into a room and locked him in there. My little sister right here called you guys while I was in here. She then told the youngest sister to keep an eye out for you and to keep the youngest happy. My jaw is now killing me, my knee hurts, because he started to hit me as well.â€Â
Once they heard this, they asked Elizabeth if this were true. Elizabeth shook her head yes. “Has he always been this way?†The police questioned.
“No, he has not. It started after we moved here. The house has to be clean before we three can go to bed.†Elizabeth said.
“Kids, what is the latest time that you’ve gone to bed?†The police asked.
“I think it was the other night when my dad purposely spilled everything onto the white carpet. It took me to midnight to get it out. When everything was cleaned up, Kyle and my mom came in and helped me finish.†Alyssa said.
“Even though it is summer vacation, no child should be working until midnight, cleaning the house like their father says to. What does he do if you do not clean?â€Â
“We get grounded.†Alyssa said.
Soon the police went and asked Michael what happened. “Elizabeth did not listen to me at all tonight. She went to bed at 9 p.m. She knows the rules. Midnight is when she can go to bed. So I had the right to hurt her.†Michael said.
“I’m sorry sir, but we’re going to have to take you into custody and take you down to the jail. You have no right whatsoever to hit your wife, make her and the kids do chores, while you sit around making a mess. Put your hands behind your head.†The one police officer said. Michael didn’t listen at first. The second officer forced him onto the bed and got his hands behind his back
Michael was taken down to the county jail and locked up for three days. Elizabeth had decided that she was going to let him back into the house, and not file for a divorce. She thought that this would tell him that he needed to change his ways big time.
A month later Michael was still making Elizabeth, Kyle and Alyssa clean. Its not what they wanted at all. Kyle and Alyssa would come home from work and be tired and want to lounge around the house. But they had to do chores. At night when Alyssa was on the internet, she had a conversation with a friend. She told her of her father’s abusive ways towards the family now. Also, she said how Kyle picked up many extra hours, and was always on the internet with his girlfriend in their old town. Katelyn was at Soccer camp for three weeks with the neighbors. David had turned 7 and went to a 3 week long summer camp with his friend. She then told her how she was always babysitting the five children next door and was shopping with her new friends. Alyssa said that Elizabeth was currently working on a hard job and was never home. Then she added that Michael would them make her mom come home and clean.
It was now around Christmas time. Michael remembered his wonderful childhood. His father was always the one to make it fun. The vacations that they had went on were the best. Michael wanted his children to have the same childhood like he did, but his ways were now hurting the family. He had to decide what to do now. Should he keep hurting his family and loose them forever? Or should he change his ways and go back to the old Michael, the one that everyone used to love? He finally decided after many weeks that he was going to change his ways. He did not like seeing his family hurting because he was hurting them. So Christmas Eve came. “Can I have everyone in the living room please?†Michael had asked. Sure enough the entire family came into the room.
“What is it dad?†David asked, as he was scared.
“I’ve decided something.†Michael asked.
“Oh yeah? What have you decided, dad?†Katelyn asked.
“I’ve decided that I’m sick and tired of seeing my family suffer because of what I’m doing to you. I’ve been going to counseling to solve my hatred problem. I’m so sorry that I’ve done this to you. I’ve never meant to hurt you. I want my wonderful children to grow up the way that I did. I had a wonderful childhood.†Michael said.
“How do we know that your actually telling the truth, dad?†Kyle asked, as he still sat there.
“Kyle Michael, I’m so sorry that I’ve done everything to you. I’ve never meant to hurt you. The truth is that I was just depressed. I missed our old life. You love it here. But I guess that’s what is going to happen.†Michael said.
“What do you mean? Oh come on dad, you know that you’ll never change. How Can we ever trust you again?†Kyle asked.
“Kyle, come on, I’m trying to tell you that I want to change my ways and be a great father like I was before!†Michael said.
“And exactly what are you going to do about it?†Alyssa asked.
“I am currently in counseling and am getting help for it.†Michael said.
“Yeah, and I’m the Queen of England. Oh come on dad, lets just face it, you will always be the same old dad that hurts us in every way mankind.†Katelyn said.
“I miss our old life. You know, the one that we had before we moved out here.†David said.
“I’m so sick of cleaning, Michael. How will I ever know that you are really telling me the truth?†Elizabeth said.
“Elizabeth, don’t you remember everything that has happened? I really am telling you the truth. You see, the fact is that I just missed our old life as well. Please take me back. I promise I’m a changed man!†Michael said.
“Whatever dad. I’ve seen things like this happen before. One of the parents becomes very abusive, and then both parents end up in a divorce because one parent cannot change his/her ways.†Kyle said. He was still in denial, like the rest of the family.
“Lets see if he is really telling the truth. Tell something about each of us from this summer on.†Katelyn said.
“Okay, fine. Kyle works part time at the local grocery store. He also played Varsity Football, and is currently on Varsity Basketball. Alyssa started high school this year. She was on Cross Country and is on Basketball. Katelyn is such a cutie. She scored 7 goals in one of her soccer games this year. David is the youngest, of course. He scored his first homerun. Elizabeth picked up extra hours at work because of me.†Michael said.
“He really is telling us the truth!†David said.
“Yes, he is.†Elizabeth said. Alyssa and Kyle still didn’t know what to say, but they went along with it for a while.
“I’m sick of having a perfectly clean house any ways. I don’t care if the house is a disaster for tomorrow.†Michael said.
“Finally! A dirty house!†Katelyn said. Everybody laughed.
The next day Michael’s family arrived for Christmas. This kids were all excited to see their family. There were tears of joy since no one had seen each other since before they moved. Everyone was just so happy. At dinner, Michael announced his change. He said that he was sorry for everything that he had done, and was sure to change his ways. Michael then announced that he was going to send the kids up to their town for New Years Eve. That’s when Michael’s parents decided that they were going to throw a huge party, and all the kids friends were to be invited. So after dinner the kids got to inviting their friends. They e-mailed them out since it was faster and easier. They were so excited that there was going to be a party for them back where home really was.
Soon the days fell by. It was now time for Kyle’s high school graduation. David was so happy for his big brother that he made him a card that said “Congratulations on your Graduation, Kyle!†Alyssa and Katelyn had helped him make the card. Katelyn made a banner that said “Congratulations Kyle!†Alyssa, being the funny one of the children, woke him up the day of his graduation with silly string. She had bought their school colors, red and blue. You would have never known that it was Kyle. “Alyssa Jean, I’m going to hurt you!†Kyle said, as he got up out of bed, and went down into the kitchen.
“Wow Kyle, what happened to you?†Michael had asked.
“Alyssa got to me.†Kyle said, as he pealed off the layers of silly string. He then noticed that there was a banner. He smiled.
“Kyle, I made this for you, with the help of Katelyn and Alyssa with the spelling.†David said. He read it.
“David, this is great!! Thanks buddy!†Kyle said as he hugged David.
The family waited to move back to let Kyle finish out his Senior year of high school. It was proven that Michael had changed. His family was so happy. They had never seen him as happy as he was in his entire life. That night when Kyle’s name was called at the graduation ceremony, he got up and cheered for his oldest son. In fact, so did the rest of the cl[arse]. Kyle had become a popular guy in his cl[arse], and was named Most Athletic.
Once they moved back, Alyssa went to Basketball camp to improve her skill on and off of the court. Katelyn was so happy that she was going into the fifth grade. David would be entering the second grade in the fall, and was happy that he had hit five homeruns the day before, and his dad was there to see him do it. Elizabeth went part time for the summer and enjoyed her children while she could. Michael looked at all his children. He decided that his past would never be a part of him again.
