Zampese MOBILE, Ala. - While Bengals quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese has received interest from the Miami Dolphins, their most prolific quarterback ever looks to be headed to their greatest rival.
Multiple sources here at the Senior Bowl said Tuesday that Ken Anderson looks to be in line for the Steelers quarterbacks job under new offensive coordinator Bruce Arians. That should spice the rivalry that already exists with quarterbacks Carson Palmer of the Bengals and Ben Roethlisberger of the Steelers as Pittsburgh heads into the Mike Tomlin Era.
Zampese didn’t get the Panthers offensive coordinator job Tuesday, but the Dolphins have asked the Bengals permission to interview him for their offensive coordinator position, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
Earlier Tuesday The Charlotte Observer reported that Carolina is in negotiations with former Browns assistant Jeff Davidson to take over as offensive coordinator after Zampese interviewed for the job last week.
It's unclear how the Dolphins would utilize Zampese since new head coach Cam Cameron has said he is going to call the plays.
Zampese and Anderson have not commented on their situations.
Anderson, 57, the Bengals’ all-time leading passer and four-time NFL passing champion, didn’t get retained in Jacksonville after four seasons under head coach Jack Del Rio that included one year as receivers coach.
After spending a franchise-best 16 seasons with Cincinnati, Anderson joined the coaching staff in 1992 and for the next 11 seasons served as either quarterbacks coach or offensive coordinator until Marvin Lewis arrived and brought in Zampese.
Anderson has never worked with the 34-year-old Tomlin, but Steelers defensive coordinator **** LeBeau is a friend and former colleague and he has been retained in Pittsburgh. LeBeau is the last head coach Anderson worked for in Cincinnati. Although he chose to replace Anderson as offensive coordinator with Bob Bratkowski before the 2001 season, LeBeau kept him as quarterbacks coach.
