A teen girl's cellphone (Kyocera - unsure model) burst into flames in her back pocket while she was volunteering.

Although it would be kind of cool to see a phone just burst into flames for no reason. I hope no one gets hurt from it.

I think they said she was being treated for burns - but I can't remember the "degree" of burns. People in the area said it sounded like someone was starting to shoot off fireworks.

I hope they weren't too serious. It's a good thing it didn't burst into flames while she was talking on it.

It was 2nd Degree burns - and you're probably right - it is a good thing she wasn't talkin on it at the time - although it may not have happened had she been using it.

Teen's Cell Phone Blows Up
July 2, 2004 — There is a bizarre story out of California where a cell phone blew up in a girl's pocket.

Authorities are checking out the charred pieces of the phone after the blast gave the 16-year-old second degree burns. It happened yesterday when she was volunteering at a youth center and people heard a whoosh sound.

The phone was in her back pocket.

Witnesses were able to put out the fire. Officials are looking into what caused the explosion.
