Title: “Take My Breath Away”

Author: Jessica (sweetest_sin21002@yahoo.com)

Author’s Note: This is my first NICK AND JESS story. I have done many, many other stories for other television shows but I have not done a Nick and Jessica one so this is my first. Anyways, please email me and let me know what you think of it. Thank you BIG thank you too Jess Morris for helping me out a ton in everything! Also, Kelly, Mary, Robin, Angel and EVERYONE else who has helped look over this or given me suggestions. Hope y’all like this; please let me know so I can keep writing!

Summary: Nick Lachey is an aspiring man in the boy band 98* and his career has finally taken the sky rocket with his buddies. Jessica Simpson is a beautiful young 17 year old girl who has finally had her dream made into reality as she signs her contract with Columbia and sets out to make her first album. Her parents move her and her younger sister out to California where Jessica will create the beginning of her long successful career and she’ll meet her Prince Charming.

Disclaimer: I don’t own Jessica or Nick (What a nice gift it would be if I did though!) And none of the other characters in this story belong to me unless I make them up. Hehe…. Please send feedback it keeps me writing!!

“Take My Breath Away“

Jessica walked out the double doors and met her mom in the front where she was waiting in her car. She’d just wrapped up another 13 hour day of recording in the studio. That was the 4th night this week she’d put in more then 11 hours at the studio. Tina knew Jessica loved every minute of it but she also began to think it was a little too much for her 17 year old daughter. Jessica opened the backseat door and threw her sweater and bag in the back before finding her place in the front.
“Hey Momma…!” Tina smiled and kissed her daughter’s head.
“Hey Jess, how did it go today?” By the smile on her daughter’s face she already knew the answer.
“Oh Momma, it was wonderful! I am having so much fun doing this; it is my dream come true Momma!”
“I know it is Jess and your father and I are just happy you have finally had that dream come true. You have waited and worked so hard for this and it is finally happening.” Jessica smiled gratefully at her mom as they pulled into their driveway. She had not stopped talking about her day in the studio since she got in the car.
“Oh and Momma, my manager wants me to go to this Hollywood Christmas parade next week. He thinks it will be good publicity.” Tina looked at Jessica’s beaming face.
“Well…that sounds like it will be fun Jessica.”
“Yeah I cannot wait!” Jessica ran up to her room and called her best friend Cooper. They talked on the phone for only 30 minutes. Jessica was beyond tired but she hadn’t talked to Coop in so long. She went downstairs ate a quick sandwich and said goodnight to both her parents and sister before heading to bed. She fell asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow. She didn’t’ wake up until noon the next day. ‘A day to rest’ she silently thought to herself. She went downstairs and everyone was eating lunch.
“Hey Jess…” She smiled.
“Hi Momma… Hey Daddy. Where is Ashlee?”
“She went over Casey’s house.” Jessica smiled and sat down.
“That is like the 4th time she has been over his house this week.”
“What are you her mom?” Tina teased her and threw the dishtowel at her. Jessica laughed and threw it back.
“I was only making an observation.” Joe looked at the two of them and laughed. “I am hungry.” As if on cue Tina placed a sandwich and chips in front of her daughter with a gl[arse] of juice. “Thanks Momma.”
“Welcome Jess.” Jessica finished up eating and got showered and dressed. She went back downstairs and grabbed her car keys. “Where are you going Jessica?” Tina yelled from the living room.
“I called Ashlee and I am going to go meet her at the mall. I need something to wear to that parade!” She walked into the living room and gave her mom and dad a kiss.
“Okay…well have fun.”
“Hello? I am going shopping! Of course I am going to have fun!” She laughed and walked out to her car.
“She has this extra hop in her step now…don’t you think so Joe?” Tina looked at her husband who was watching the television. He looked over and smiled.
“Of course she does. She is finally getting the chance to do what she loves most.” Tina smiled and turned her attention back to her book.
“Yeah…” She whispered to herself. Meanwhile, Jessica and Ashlee were going to their 6th store to find something “cute” for Jessica to wear to the Hollywood ABC parade.
“Ohhhh…! Ashlee! This is so cute!” Jessica squealed and ran over to show her sister the red velvet “Santa” like outfit she had found.
“Awe…itâ€⠢s definitely cute Jess!” The two squealed and walked over to the dressing room. Jessica tried it on and was in love with it. They walked to the register and paid, by the time they left the mall it was close to dinner and they decided to go to McDonald’s and eat. Jessica and Ashlee got in just before seven p.m. and they sat with Tina and Joe for a while before Jessica headed up for bed early. “You are no fun Jess! Stay up a while for us it is only Saturday you have tomorrow to sleep in too.” Jessica turned to her sister.
“I am sorry. I am just way too tired. I need sleep. Goodnight momma, daddy.” She gave them both a kiss goodnight. “Goodnight Ash.”
“Goodnight Jess.” They all spoke in unison to her.
“Love you…”
“Love you too…” Jessica headed up and got ready for bed. She looked in the large mirror in her bedroom before putting her shirt on. She hated the way she looked. ‘Why do I have to be so fat? Why can’t I just be normal like everyone else? Why can’t I be like Cooper or Step or Ashlee? Why is it me God? Why is it me?’ She threw her shirt on and climb in bed with a few tears in her eyes. She pulled out her journal from under her pillow and opened it to a clean fresh page.

<span style="font-family:Geneva"> Journal Entry
December 2, 1998

I’m really stressed out. You are having the time of your life with this album and finally being able to do what you love most. You are making a dream come true and are so grateful for everything your parents have done to get you where you are today. You know without them you wouldn’t be here but it is so stressful and you feel like people are looking at you and you are not good enough for them. You went shopping with Ashlee today and then went to McDonald’s. WHY! Why didn’t you just come home and have a salad? Why did you eat that? You’re never going to look good! You have to use the restroom or you’ll gain weight- and what will people think? Don’t you want to be famous? Your face is so broken out. You’re fat! Another Coke?! Eat, eat, eat, eat- don’t you ever feel sick? I’m beginning to hate myself. What’s wrong with me? Lately, I’ve been forgetting the inside stuff and only concentrating on the outside. I need confidence.

Love always,
Jessica Ann

She closed her journal and sighed. She placed it back under her pillow, wiped more tears from her eyes and covered herself in her blankets and cried herself to sleep. The rest of Jessica’s week and most of the second week pretty much consisted of working long 13 hour days in the studio. Finally on Thursday she had the day off and that Friday was the Hollywood Christmas parade. She was going to be singing one of her songs on her album. It was called ‘I Wanna Love You Forever.’ She was really nervous to perform for the first time but the adrenaline in her made her want to do it so bad. She got up rather early Friday morning and worked in the studio for 4 hours and then headed home to take a short rest. At 3 p.m. she took her shower and had her hair and make-up done.
“Jess, the outfit looks adorable on you.” Her mother smiled as she looked at Jessica who was all ready and in her outfit she’d bought at the mall.
“Thanks momma. I am really nervous that I will screw this up tonight.” Jess looked at her mother nervously.
“You are going to do great Jess.” Her mom hugged her.
“I’ve never performed like this, I am just afraid they will not like me.”
“They will love you babe.” Tina smiled and grabbed her keys. “Now let’s get this show on the road. We have to meet with your manager before you go out and perform.”
“Okay.” Tina, Joe, Ashlee and Jessica all hopped in the car and drove to the parade.
“We should have gotten the limo.” Ashlee complained jokingly.
“Be quiet Ash, our car is fine.” Jess laughed at her. They got there and met up with Jessica’s manager who was in the middle of talking to a guy. They patiently waited for him to finish. The guy he was talking to was obviously a singer. He had his microphone on and was wearing a pair of red overalls. Jessica and Ashlee were looking all around at all the people, there were so many there. Jessica however, kept focusing her eyes back to the man talking with her manager. She nudged her sister and whispered. “Oh my gosh, look at his butt in those pants! He is so cute!” She squealed and looked at Ashlee who just rolled her eyes and laughed at her sister. “Well, he is! I mean come on, look at him!”
“Okay, okay Jess! I get the picture…he is hot.” Jessica laughed and her parents looked over at both of them.
“See! You agree with me.” Ashlee laughed again.
“Anything to keep you quiet.” She teased. Just then her manager walked over towards them and the guy was following behind him.
“Hey Joe! Hey Tina.” They all shook hands and he turned to Jessica. “Hey Jess.”
“Hi Mike.” They shared a friendly hug and Jessica kept smiling at the man behind Mike.
“Anyways, before we go through everything happening tonight I wanted you to meet someone.” The man stopped forward. “This is another artist I am a manager for, this is Nick Lachey. Nick is the lead vocalist for the band 98*. They have a new album and are going to be performing tonight after you.” Jessica smiled staring at Nick. “Nick this is Jessica Simpson. I don’t really have to make that much of an introduction because I have been speaking with Nick about you and your music lately. He’s listened to some of the tracks you are working on. He’s also come up with some ideas too, so hopefully we can get together in the studio soon.” Nick stepped forward and extended his right hand.
“It is so nice to finally meet you. I have really heard a lot about you, and I think your voice is amazing. You’ve really got some great tracks recorded.” Jessica blushed and shook his hand.
“Um…thanks.â₠ She laughed nervous and unsure what to say. “That’s really nice of you to say.” She smiled and Mike introduced Nick to the rest of Jessica’s family. While Mike was going over the plan for the night a girl had walked over to Nick and she reached for his hand. Jessica noticed this and her smile immediately faded to a frown. She turned on her heel and walked back stage to get her microphone on for her first performance. She was all ready to go and she walked on the stage. There were people everywhere, but she could only keep her eyes focused on Nick and the girl he was with.

Jessica’s POV

I stood there smiling and tears surfaced my eyes threatening to fall as my first audience ever screamed and cheered my name. I’d pulled off my first performance ever phenomenally.
“Thank you, I love you all.” I held back tears and walked back stage. My mom, dad and Ashlee all ran to me and hugged the life of me.
“You did great sweetheart.” My mom hugged me tighter and then they told me they’d be back. They were hungry and needed to speak to Mike. I pulled away from her and they walked away, I finally let my tears fall. Just as soon as my tears started they stopped because I heard him. I turned at the call of my name.
“Jessica…† I was face to face with Nick…alone, there was nobody with him. No friends, no family, no GIRL! I smiled when I saw him.
“Yeah…?†He smiled and reached his hand out to mine. I quickly accepted.
“I just wanted to say you did phenomenal out there. I literally had chills run through my body. It was amazing.” The tears that left so quickly were back just as fast.
“Thank you.” I managed to choke out. I felt stupid for crying in front of him. “Sorry…it†„¢s just that this is my first performance and, well…I’m nervous and beyond grateful the crowd liked me as much as they did. Then to have you compliment me means so much also.” He nodded his head and smiled.
“It’s okay. I understand and thank you for the compliment that is very sweet of you to say. I’m only speaking the truth. You are very gifted and talented.”
“Thank you.” I smiled.
“I have to get ready to perform so maybe I’ll catch up with you later tonight?” I nodded my head again.
“That would be great, good luck!”
“Thanks.” He smiled and patted my shoulder lightly before walking to three other guys who I presumed to be his band mates. They were all dressed in matching overalls. I talked to my parents for a while and then told them I wanted to go watch Nick sing. I sat in the front on the side, my security stood by me and I looked over to my right and a few chairs down was that girl. The one Nick was with. I sat there staring at her but my attention was brought back to the stage when the lights dimmed and the crowd started screaming. When I turned Nick was there, smiling and looking as good as ever. I smiled and he stepped forward as he began his verse. When the chorus came in and the rest of the group chimed in I was only looking at Nick and my smiled expanded 100 times wider when I saw he was looking right into my eyes and singing to me. My eyes never left his while he was on the stage and when they were done I went back to congratulate him. He was standing with bottled water and the 3 others around him. He was all sweaty but he still looked amazing! I walked over to him and tapped him on the shoulder. He turned around and I smiled.
“Great job.” He took a sip of water and smiled.
“Thank you, hey I want you to meet my buddies.” He reached for my hand and we walked closer to the three of them. “This is Jeff, Justin and my brother Drew.” I shook each one of their hands.
“Or as and everyone else know them… 98” I laughed.
“Guys, this is Jessica Simpson.” He turned to me. “We’ve all heard all about you so they in a way know you.” I smiled at Nick.
“It’s nice to meet all of you.” I turned to all of them and smiled.
“You too…” They all spoke to me and as they did my dad walked over to me.
“Jess…there you are. We’re going to join the parade and everyone now.”
“Okay daddy. First, you have to meet Nick’s friends; the rest of 98” I turned and pointed each of them out, introducing them one by one.
“It’s nice to meet you all, you did wonderful tonight.”
“Thank you.”
“I’m sure we will be seeing more of you tonight and in the future.” I turned and said goodbye to them. Then I walked to Nick.
“Bye Nick. I’ll see you later.”
“Of course you will.” I laughed. “Bye Jessica, have fun.” I waved to them.
“Thank you.” I went off with my parents and sister and we met tons of new people. Through the whole evening I kept glancing at Nick but that girl was with him. He kept looking at me and I kept looking at him. Every time I’d steel a look at him he’d be looking at me. I couldn’t stop glancing at him but I also knew I shouldn’t be since he obviously had a girlfriend. Every time I saw him looking at me he’d smile and I blushed. He was so handsome and so down to earth. I barely knew the guy but he seemed amazing and I feared that I’d already begun falling head over heels for the man. For the last ½ hour we were there I tried to force myself not to look or think about him but I failed at that. When we were ready to leave I went over and said goodbye to him. His girlfriend was with him so I said goodbye to the guys first and waited for his girlfriend to leave which was near impossible, she was like a leech attaching to its prey but I don’t blame her…I mean if you saw this man you’d know what I’m saying. Finally she walked over to get a drink and I walked over to Nick.
“Hey, I just wanted to say bye to you before I left. I’m sorry I did not get to meet your girlfriend, she seems nice.” I lied but I wanted to be nice.
“Oh, she is not my girlfriend.” I tried not to smile.
“She’s not?”
“No, my high school sweetheart broke up with me and I just wanted to have someone with me tonight.” Too bad it wasn’t me…that’s what I wanted to say.
“I’m sorry.”
“No, it’s all good. We were together 8 years, I couldn’t make a commitment and I am not really sure I wanted to. It just wasn’t meant to be. Its all okay, she couldn’t handle this long distance thing either. I’m sorry; I don’t mean to be rambling on to you. You barely even know me, I’m probably crazy to you.” I laughed.
“No…not at all. I’m sorry but if you ask me, it’s her loss not yours.” He smiled.
“Thanks…† I smiled at him. “I’ll talk to you soon.”
“Okay, great. Goodnight Nick thanks.”
“Anytime…† He smiled, patted my shoulder and I left.

Nick’s POV

She walked away and I wanted more then anything to call her back and just take her in my arms and hug her. She was the most beautiful, drop dead gorgeous girl I’d ever seen. I stared ahead where she was moments ago and was dazed, I didn’t even hear my date. Finally, I felt the tap on my shoulder and I turned around.
“Nicky…let†™s go dance.” She was whining, gosh I couldn’t stand that.
“Don’t call me Nicky please, and I’m not that great a dancer so would you mind if I didn’t?” I looked at her…she wasn’t happy.
“Fine…” She pouted.
“And anyways, it’s getting late. Don’t you want to start heading back to the hotel? The party is dying down and everyone is leaving.” I really just didn’t want to stay. I wanted to go home and be alone.
“Whatever you say…Nick, are you okay?” I looked at her and tensed up a little as she reached for my hand.
“Yeah, I am fine. I am just tired, it has been a long night.” I went over and said bye to the guys and Mike. Mike and I agreed to meet up in the studio Monday. After saying bye to everyone security led us out to the limo. We pulled up to her hotel and I stepped out and walked her to her room.
“Goodnight, thanks for coming.” She hugged me.
“Thanks for inviting me.”
“I am sorry if I seemed out of it and you had a lousy time.”
“No…no… I had a great time tonight thanks for inviting me and flying me out here.”
“Anytime…† I smiled hugged her and kissed her cheek.
“Bye Nick…”
“Bye…” I waved and made sure she got inside before returning to my limo. My ride to my hotel was quiet; I sat there thinking about Jessica. She lit up the room, she was the most beautiful girl I’d ever seen and I know I am repeating myself but that one fact bears repeating. My limo came to a stop and I was led up to my room with the guys. They were all in there having a good time but I sat and watched on quietly. My cell phone rang and I stepped on the balcony to answer it…it was Mike.
“Hey Mike…it’s late what’s up?” I was desperately hoping it had something to do with Jessica.
“I know man, sorry but I just found out about this party the Teen People magazine is hosting January 10th. You guys are going to be traveling the states doing promotion so I have to see what you wanted to do about it. I mean I can decline the invitation if your going to be away that night or---.” I cut him off.
“No, we get done on the 7th of January. I’m pretty sure we do so if I fly out to LA from Cincinnati that’d be fine.”
“You sure…?”
“Yeah…yeah, and then I’ll just fly back to Cincy the next day or something, it’s cool. We go back to doing out promotion around the states on January 17th so it’s cool, I can do that.”
“Okay…great, thanks Nick. I’ll be talking to you tomorrow or in the week sometime.”
“Alright thanks…” I hung up the phone and walked back inside where the guys were watching a movie. I got ready for bed and lay in my bed watching the movie, it didn’t take me long to fall asleep and when I did get to sleep I was dreaming about Jessica all night.

Jessica’s POV

The next 3 or 4 weeks flew by for me. They were full of countless amounts of hours in the studio. Things were taking forever but they were doing awesome. I’d been invited by Teen People to attend their annual party January 10th and I was excited to be going. It was in a little over a week. I had my dress all picked out and done. Well I shouldn’t say dress, it was a red pant set. They were red leather pants and a matching red shirt. It was cute; my mom helped me pick it out. I wanted to look good because I knew someone was going to be there. Mike had called to ask if I wanted to go and he mentioned that Nick would be going also. I guess the band was going around the states right now to do some promotion but Nick was going to be at the party…probably with another girl or something. Well, even if he is I don’t care I am going to look my best and dress up to impress him. I had today off so mom and I went to the mall and then to lunch. By the time we got home Ashlee was home eating a sandwich at the table. Ashlee and I sat and chatted for a while until I finally went upstairs to write in my journal. I stayed in my room and flipped through the stations on TV. Finally I fell asleep and didn’t wake up until my dad came upstairs to tell me dinner was ready. I joined the rest of my family downstairs and had my dinner. We all went out afterwards and had ice cream. It was so beautiful out, nice and warm. When we got home we all played Monopoly and finally Ashlee and I went upstairs to go to bed. The next was really crazy trying to wrap up as much in the studio as I could. It was hectic enough without the studio part because we had flown everyone in from Texas for Christmas and the holidays are always crazy anyways. They are fun but hectic. I loved the fact I finally got to see my family because it had been so long being busy with everything. Finally the night of the party came, I was all ready and I asked my sister a thousand times how I looked and if I looked good. After insisting I looked amazing I went downstairs where Cacee was waiting for me. Ashlee couldn’t come tonight, she was going out and so were my mom and dad, so one of my best friends (Cacee) was going with me. We got in the limo and she filled me in on all the latest gossip and everything going on with her. Then I told her about Nick. I was gushing on and on about him but I couldn’t help it. She laughed at me and was teasing me, but we both just laughed. The limo finally pulled up and we got out and I went in search of Mike. He introduced me to some people and others just came up to me and told me they’d heard snips of my album from work or somewhere etc… and that they loved it. As the night got busier I kept looking for one person. I hadn’t seen him at all and when I walked over to the refreshment table that is when I saw him. He looked even better than he did the last time I saw him. There was another woman with him but she was way too old to be his girlfriend…I think. He saw me and smiled and waved before turning around and walking away. My heart kind of dropped because he didn’t say anything, not “hey” or “what’s up?” just a wave. I wanted to cry but too many people were around and would see me.

Nick’s POV

I had been looking for her all night and I finally saw her getting something to drink. She was absolutely breathtaking. I couldn’t keep my eyes off of her. When I walked away I needed to talk to my mom who I brought along, only so she could help me, and of course because she is mom. That is what they do; they help you and are there for you. I sat next to mom and talked to her.
“Mom, you know that girl over there?” She nodded and I continued. “I like her…a lot and your job tonight is to get me in good with this girl.” I pointed over at Jessica. She looked at me and I gave her my puppy dog look. “Please mom, I want to start with a good impression.” She laughed and kissed my head like I was a little kid.
“Okay, I’ll say something.” She got up and I reached for her hand.
“Remember, good impression please.” She laughed at me again and nodded. I watched her walk over and I followed her. “I should introduce you two first.” I was nervous and it was obvious. I walked over to Jessica and put my hand on her shoulder. “Hey Jessica.” She turned around and there was that beautiful smile.
“Nick! Hey.” She sounded happy to see me and that is a good start.
“How are you?”
“I am great, I head you’ve been really busy, you must be tired. I am surprised you showed up.” I smiled; I was so comfortable with just being here and talking to her.
“I am a little tired but I wouldn’t miss the party. The rest of the guys are scattered all over this party somewhere.” She laughed and looked at my mom and I turned to my mom. “Sorry, this is my mother. Mom, this is Jessica, Jessica this is Cate…my mom.” My mom shook Jessica’s hand.
“It is very nice to meet you Jessica.”
“You too, your son is very nice.” I smiled big this time.
“Thanks.” I smiled at Jessica.
“He can be at times.” I looked at mom and gave her a look. “I am just kidding; he is a very nice guy.” They both laughed and I looked at them and smiled. I took this chance to go and let them talk.
“I have to go talked to Drew; I’ll be back in a little bit.”
“Okay, bye Nick.” Jessica waved and I smiled.
“Bye Jessica, bye mom.”
“Bye Nicky.” I looked at her and turned bright red. Jessica was laughing and I just walked away quick, maybe I shouldn’t have asked my mother to put a good word in for me. I was beginning to get nervous about this, well I was getting more nervous. I turned around one more time and saw them sitting next to each other laughing. That is a good sign; I smiled and walked over to Drew and Lea.

Jessica’s POV

Here was Nick’s mother sitting next to me and telling me about her son. I was nervous at first when he introduced me to his mom but she is a really down to earth person, well she seems it. We kept talking, mostly her talking to me. I looked up when Cacee came over.
“Excuse me Cate.” I turned to her. “What’s up?”
“Nothing, I just wanted to make sure I didn’t lose you.” I laughed.
“Nope, I am just talking here with Nick’s mom.” I turned back to Cate. “Cate, this is one of my friends Cacee and Cacee this is Cate.”
“I didn’t mean to interrupt. I am going to go get more food, it is good here.” I laughed, that was definitely Cacee, always going for the food. Cate and I turned back to each other and picked up where our conversation left off. She was really sweet and Nick was a sweet, down to earth guy that is what I was picking up on and thinking as she kept talking about him. I told her more about me and my childhood and my family. We were talking for a long time and enjoying ourselves when Nick came over.
“Hey mom, are you talking Jessica’s ear off?” I laughed.
“No she is not. We were having a very nice conversation actually.” I smiled at Cate.
“Yes, we have been enjoying ourselves, she is a very sweet girl Nicholas.” I looked at Nick and saw him turning red. It was cute, Cate stood up and gave me a hug and then gave Nick a hug. “I am going to talk to Drew and Lea now.”
“Okay mom, I’ll see you in a bit.”
“Okay dear.” She patted his shoulder and walked away. I looked back at Nick.
“So, you want to sit and talk or walk around?” I smiled.
“Yeah, sitting and talking sounds nice.” He smiled and we walked back to where I was previously sitting. Cacee came over and sat with us just at that moment. As much as I love her I wanted to finally sit and talk with Nick…alone.
“Hey Jess!” She smiled.
“Hey Cacee…”
“And you must be “the” Nicholas Lachey.” I sank down in my seat and turned bright red. This was bad having Cacee here; I knew she’d embarr[arse] me. Nick shot a glance over at me and I saw a grin on his face.
“Uh…yeah, that is me.” She shook his hand.
“Jess has told me so much about you, even though she just met you. I mean for the last 3 weeks she has gone on and on…Nick this…and Nick likes this…Nick that and Nick-----.” I covered my hand over her mouth and I was so red in the face, I could feel it.
“Cacee is a little TOO excited tonight. She has never been to something like this.” I tried lying and coming up with any excuse. Nick looked like he was laughing on the inside.
“It is okay.” Cacee stood up.
“Well, I see how loved I am right now so I am going to find other people to talk to.” I laughed at her and she hugged me.
“Good idea…” I teased her. She left and I turned back to Nick. We talked for a little bit but we kept getting interrupted by different people so all we really got to talk about was my new album and his tour coming up. It was getting late and Cacee and I were leaving. Nick and I exchanged phone numbers before leaving.
“Call me whenever you can.” He gave me that smile.
“Of course I will. Whenever you’re free give me a call.”
“I will thank you…” I smiled at him and he patted my shoulder like he did the last time.
“Goodnight Jessica.” We smiled at each other.
“Bye…” Cacee and I walked to the limo and I smiled all the way home. I couldn’t wait till tomorrow. First thing on my list when I woke up…call Nick!

Jessica’s POV

I woke up the next morning and wrote in my journal as soon as I was awake enough to do so:

Journal Entry
January 11th 1999

Dear Journal,

Well, last night was the party I’ve been writing all about. Nick was there! He looked so hot! He was the first person I noticed, no girl was with him this time, well just his mom, but NO date! I talked to his mom, she told me so much about him, and he seems like the greatest guy. He and I talked too and he gave me his phone number and of course I gave him mine! He told me to call him, after I get done in the studio tonight; first thing I’m going to do is call him. I have to go get ready for another day in the studio! I promise I’ll write you soon!

Always,
Jessica Ann

I smiled and close the journal, I showered and dressed and finally walked down to eat breakfast. My mom was the only one down there.
“Morning sweetheart.” I was wide awake even though I’d had a long night.
“Morning momma!” I kissed her cheek and sat at the table to eat the breakfast she had made me.
“Somebody is in a good mood. How was the party last night?” I looked up and smiled.
“Wonderful! Cacee had a good time, I had an excellent time.”
“I am guessing you bumped into a very certain Nick Lachey?” I beamed at her.
“Yes! I talked to his mom for most of the evening and then he and I talked for a while but it was late by the time him and I got a chance to talk. When we did though it was great!” I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face the whole time I was talking.
“And…?” My mom knew there was more to be said.
“And I may have gotten a certain phone number.” My mom laughed.
“And did he get a certain someone’s phone number?”
“Of course he did! He promised to call and told me I better call him.” I laughed. “Momma, he is the sweetest guy ever! I mean he’s just the best and I barely know him, he’s so caring and down to earth.” I kept going on about him. “And he’s gorgeous!” Both my mom and I laughed when I said that. I finished eating my breakfast and my mom took my dishes. “Anyways, I’m going to call him today after I get done in the studio.” My mom grabbed her bag and keys.
“Okay, well lets get down there now and the quicker you finish the quicker it’ll be till you call him.” I laughed, grabbed my things and we were out the door on our way to the studio. I spent 5 ½ hours in the studio before I was finally able to take a lunch break. I tried to call Nick but I got his voicemail. I debated whether I should leave a message or not. I decided I would leave a quick message and try him later tonight.
“Hey Nick its Jessica. I am at lunch right now in the studio. I’ll call you later; I just wanted to see how you were doing. I had a great time at the party last night, thanks for keeping me company, I appreciated it. Take care…” I hung up and ate my lunch. After lunch I wrapped up more of the album. We’d gotten so much done and soon we’d be to the point where we had to pick and choose what singles we liked and disliked. I ended up leaving early for once. Mom and I stopped at Subway and grabbed dinner for the two of us. Dad had taken Ashlee out for dinner. We got home at 8 and I ate then went upstairs to call Nick. I called his cell and got no answer so I tried the other number he gave me. Somebody else answered.
“Hi…is Nick there?” I was nervous.
“Yeah one second, can I ask whose calling?”
“It is Jessica.”
“Okay, hold on one second.” A few seconds later I heard Nick pick up and tell the other guy to hang up.
“Hello.” I smiled.
“Hey, it is Jessica.”
“Hey! How are you?” He sounded happy to hear from me.
“I am okay, you?”
“I am doing alright. I was packing.”
“Oh? Where are you going?” I was curious.
“We’re heading overseas for a month in a week.” I frowned.
“Oh, that is cool.” I didn’t want to sound upset even though I was.
“Yeah, I guess so.” He didn’t sound to enthusiastic. “I got your message earlier. How did it go in the studio today?”
“It was long but a lot of fun. We’re almost done with actual demos then we’ll pick and choose what we want and go from there.”
“Awesome. Sorry I didn’t call you back earlier.”
“Oh, don’t worry its okay.” We both talked a little bit more about our days. I was on the phone with him for almost 2 hours.
“I should probably let you go…it is late. Do you think you and I could go out before I leave or something?” I smiled.
“Yeah sure, I’d love to.”
“Great! How does Wednesday night sound? I know it is a weird night but I have to leave Friday morning, if Wednesday isn’t good I can do Tuesday.”
“Wednesday is perfect.” I smiled again.
“Excellent, I’ll pick you up 7:00 p.m.?”
“Sounds wonderful.” I was jumping up and down on the inside.
“Okay, I’ll see you Wednesday then.”
“Okay, I’ll call you late this week and give you directions to my house.”
“Sounds good to me...”
“Bye Nick…”
“Bye Jessica…” I hung up and screamed happily. My sister and mother came running upstairs. After I told them everything they laughed and said goodnight to me. I got all ready for bed, said goodnight to my dad and went back up to write in my journal. I wrote quickly and turned my light off. I had to be up early for church in the morning. I fell asleep quickly. My mom woke me up for church at 7 a.m. the next morning. The four of us went to church and came home after a nice brunch. I couldn’t stop thinking about Nick the entire time. Finally while mom was cooking dinner I went up and called Nick.
“Hello…â€Â
“Hey Nick its Jessica.”
“Hey you…! How are you?”
“I am so bored, I am not use to having a day off.” He laughed.
“Yeah I know what you mean.”
“Am I interrupting you?”
“I am rehearsing but don’t worry, I am on break right now.”
“Are you sure?”
“Positive…if you want me to call you in like an hour and ½ I should be home by then.”
“Okay, I’ll talk to you then.”
“Okay bye Jess.”
“Bye…” I hung up and lay back on my bed and stared at the ceiling till Ashlee called me down for dinner. I ate with my family, and the phone rang during dessert. I jumped up. “I got it!” I ran over to the phone. “Hello.” I tried sounding calm.
“Hey!” I smiled, I knew it was Nick.
“Hey how are you?”
“Good…sorry I was a little longer then I thought I was going to be.”
“Oh it is okay. Can you just hang on one second?”
“Sure can…” I went back to the table. “It is Nick…can I go up and finish talk to him?” I had already finished most of my dessert.
“Okay, but don’t be on too long, you have to be up early.”
“Okay thanks daddy…” I ran back and grabbed the phone. “Okay sorry about that. We were in the middle of dinner.” I ran upstairs and closed my door behind me.
“Oh I am sorry I didn’t know you were eating. I could call you back.”
“No, it is okay I was finished.”
“Okay…” I lay on my bed and got comfortable.
“Anyways, how was rehearsal tonight?”
“Long and tiring.” I laughed.
“Awe poor Nicky…” I talked in a baby voice teasing him.
“Ha-ha…you’re just lucky I like you because I don’t let just anyone call me that. Actually I don’t let anyone call me that.” I giggled.
“I’m just special.”
“Yes, something like that. So please share with me who ‘Jessica Simpson’ is. What’s the Jessica Simpson like?” I laughed at the term he was using.
“”Well, what would you like to know?”
“Everything, tell me everything.” I giggled.
“Okay well I am Jessica.” He laughed. “My middle name is Ann.”
“That’s a beautiful name. Jessica Ann…it’s beautiful.”
“Well thank you. Uhh...my birthday is July 10th. I’ll be 19. I was born and raised in Texas. I have a younger sister; she is 4 years younger then me. Her name is Ashlee. My mom was an aerobics teacher and stay at home mom and my dad was a Baptist minister. Well he still is but he’s not practicing right now and he is a youth counselor.”
“Whoa! You’re dad is a minister?”
“”Yeah why…?”
“No, no, I am just shocked. I did not know that.”
“Oh…”
“So you’re a Southern Baptist then?”
“Yeah…”
“That’s cool, hard to find a church here though isn’t it?” He joked.
“Yeah…we just go to a Baptist church now. How about you? I mean if you don’t mind my asking.”
“Oh not at all… I got to a Presbyterian church right here in L.A.”
“Oh cool… Did you grow up going…”
“To church every Sunday morning?” I laughed. “Yep, I did. My family is very religious and we all use to go.”
“Same here…I mean obviously with my dad you know?”
“Yeah…so should I be scared I’m taking the minister’s daughter out?” I laughed.
“No, but that sounds like a movie.” We both laughed. “Anyways, I got a record deal for a gospel label when I was 13, we were working on my album when it fell through and went bankrupt.”
“I’m sorry…”
“Thanks, but it’s alright. I spent most of my time with my church and staying with my faith. You know?”
“Yeah…”
“I hated being at school, I only wanted to go to see my friends. Girls would make fun of how I looked and guys would only want one thing and I am not about that.”
“Awe poor Jess.”
“Yeah, I mean I’ll be right up front and straight with you. I am a virgin, I made a vow to myself and my father when I was 12 that I’d remain a virgin until I got married.” I stayed quiet and waited for his reaction. I was kind of nervous.
“Did you really?” He asked me in his normal voice.
“Yeah, so now if you don’t want to go out with me Wednesday I’ll unders…”
“Don’t be silly. I wouldn’t cancel Wednesday for anything. You’re so special Jessica, there is just this special vibe I got the first time I met you, that vow I a decision you made and I respect that 100% I’m proud of you even.” I smiled and blew a sigh of relief.
“Thank you Nick…I guess I just wanted to be up front and open with you.”
“Well I appreciate that but if you don’t mind I’d like to stick around.” I smiled even bigger.
“I don’t mind at all. I’d be more then happy if you did.”
“Good, now what more do I need to know about you?” I laughed.
“I’m a hopeless romantic, and I am so old fashioned and traditional.”
“You are, are you?”
“Yeah, you have no idea how old fashioned I am. I’m such a cheese ball, and I can be so cheesy.” We both laughed. We talked a while more about my childhood, family and just him wanting to get to know me. I’d been on the phone for over 2 hours when he started to tell me a little about himself, we were both so tired though. I ended up giving him directions to my house for Wednesday and we both were too tried to talk anymore.
“Goodnight Jess…sleep tight and I’ll call you tomorrow. I loved talking to you tonight.” I smiled.
“I loved it too, thank you. I’ll talk to you tomorrow. Night Nicky…” I teased. We hung up and I looked at the clock…9:45 p.m., he had called me at 6:30 p.m. Time seemed to go buy so quick too. I wrote in my journal about and got myself ready for bed. I said goodnight to everyone and climbed into bed dreaming about Nick, I couldn’t wait till Wednesday!
