Drew Lachey Joins Rent Cast on September 10
As Broadway.com first reported on March 22, Drew Lachey of 98° fame will make his Broadway debut in Rent this fall. He is set to play the role of Mark from September 10 through March 10, according to a production spokesperson.
Lachey, born Andrew John Lachey, was working as an EMT in New York when his brother, Nick Lachey, asked him to join his pop group (which was not yet called 98°) after another member had dropped out. He joined his brother, Jeff Timmons and Justin Jeffre in a group that later became 98°. The quartet's first single, "Invisible Man," went gold in 1997, the same year their eponymous debut recording was released. Their next record, 98° and Rising, came out the following year and featured popular songs including "The Hardest Thing," "True to Your Heart" and "I Do (Cherish You)." They followed that up with an album of holiday tunes entitled This Christmas and 2000's Revelation, which featured the hit singles "Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche)" and "My Everything." In 2002 the band members issued a statement saying that 98° was "on hiatus," but the group has never officially broken up.
Lachey will be the second boy band member to take on the role of Mark in Broadway's Rent. The show previously scored big at the box office when Joey Fatone of 'N Sync fame took on the part in the summer of 2002. (Fatone is set to star in Little Shop of Horrors in June.)
