Here's my review of "WLOM" for my school's paper! Please tell me what you think about it, y'all :)
Pop singer Nick Lachey has had a career that’s spanned since the late 90’s, even though for the majority of it he has flown under the mainstream radar. He is once again trying to get his name into the headlines with his latest CD release “What’s Left Of Me†May 9. Many know Lachey as the lead singer in the B-list boy band 98 Degrees, but is best known for his reality show with wife Jessica Simpson. Even though the show was about Nick and Jessica’s marriage, , it aided the launch of Jessica into stardom while Nick was left in the shadows. This was reflected in his first solo effort, “SoulO,†which under performed in sales despite TV fame.
Now he is back to prove himself with his latest effort, What’s Left Of Me. The record has a different twist on the music resulting for the different changes in his life. (Nick and Jessica announced they were getting divorced in November). This event contributed to the album’s new sound; the usually smooth melodies that one might expect from him are replaced by an edgier, guitar driven pop rock that appeals to many listeners. Lachey’s tenor voice displays a more forceful, emotional quality. Despite the changes, Lachey shines on every track. He spilled his heart and soul into this album and that is obvious to the listener’s ear. The title track talks about how he is ready to move on from this era of his life. The song includes lyrics like “I don’t want to waste another day/Stuck in the shadow of my mistakes.â€Â.
A couple highlights from the album include “Ghostsâ€Â, a reflection about see a ghost of a relationship past; “I Can’t Hate You Anymore†which is about how someone giving everything in a relationship but doesn’t receive anything in return and the ray of light “Resolution.†This song is a light,, pa9ino tinged melody about letting go of all the depression and sorrow in life and moving on to happier times.
Overall, “What’s Left of Me†is a very enjoyable album. Every song has something good about it. It has an appeal that captures not only Lachey’s faithful, but any pop music lover that is looking for good music.
