Jessica entered the cl[arse]room, over 10 minutes late, and even more eyes were on her than usual. This time, Jessica hadn't entered the room bright eyed, smiling, bubbly, and prompt like she usually did. This time, Jessica had the hood of her purple pullover on her head, mascara running down her beautiful face, and quiet as a mouse. She moved quietly and quickly to her normal seat across from her best friend Lexi. She sighed and pulled the MP3 player out of her purse, putting the headphones onto her head, which was still covered by the hood. Lexi glanced over at her favorite companion of 17 years, and her heart just broke for her. One look at Jessica and Lexi knew that Jessica was in major emotional pain, but she didn't want to talk to her about it, and Lexi wasn't going to ask.
"Ms. Simpson," their teacher, Mrs. Davis, began. Getting no response from Jessica, she motioned for Lexi to get her attention. Lexi tapped Jessica on the arm and pointed to Mrs. Davis. Jessica quickly paused the MP3 player in her hands, and looked up to the teacher with swollen, red, bloodshot eyes.
"Is there a problem? A reason as to your tardiness?" She quizzed in her usual, sharp tone. Jessica shifted her eyes back to the floor, and solemnly shook her head. Mrs. Davis gave her an angry look, her catlike green eyes piercing through Jessica. "Ms. Simpson, I did not just come in on a truck of turnips. You know your schedule perfectly well and that means you know what time you should report to cl[arse]. Now, I suggest you tell me what the problem is, before I have to report your tardiness to the counselor."
"Really, Mrs. Davis, its nothing. It won't happen again." Jessica whispered, her voice small in the huge, dimly lit room. She was trying to remain calm, but lately that was becoming harder and harder. Mrs. Davis pushed everyone to the limit, and Jessica was no exception.
"You're exactly right it -" Mrs. Davis stopped her sentence and took a long, cold glance around the room. She stopped on every pupil, examining them from the inside out. After a long silence, she finally spoke again, her voice shrill and obviously a little angry. "And where is Mr. Lachey? The boy never misses cl[arse]! Ms. Simpson, would you mind shining some light on the whereabouts of your 'love'?" Mrs. Davis continued, her cold eyes still darting across the room. Jessica was silent as a lump formed in her throat and warm tears shone in her big brown eyes. "Ms. Simpson? A response would be appropriate." Mrs. Davis kept going, continuing to refer to Jessica with a title, as she did all her students. Jessica's temper was flaring. Her cheeks became flushed, and tears began pouring down her face.
"He had some... family problems. He went home." Jessica's voice lacked all emotion. She discreetly looked up to Mrs. Davis and saw nothing but fury in her eyes. She was peering at Jessica over the rims of her gl[arse]es, a sour expression on her face.
"Mrs. Simpson! I have had quite enough of this beating around the bush! I do not care in the least if Mr. Lachey is the lead singer in some stupid 'band'. You had best tell me what kind of family problems Mr. Lachey encountered, and I want the truth. None of this avoiding the answer. One more response like that, and you will find yourself a nice seat in the principal's office!" Mrs. Davis exclaimed, her voice shriller and angrier than ever. That was the last straw. Today was not a good day, and Mrs. Davis was not helping. Jessica was seeing red. Her breathing became quicker and harder, and you could almost see the steam coming out of her ears. That is, if they weren't still covered by a hood. If Mrs. Davis wanted an answer, well she'd get one.
"For your information, 'Mr. Lachey' 's parents were in a car accident! Doctor's don't know if they'll make it! Please excuse Nick for leaving school to go to the hospital to see his dying parents! It won't happen again, Mrs. Davis! Do you know why? Because, to be honest, he probably won't haveparents in a few days! Is that the kind of answer you were looking for?" Jessica screamed, tears falling harder than ever and her breathing sharp and quick. Mrs. Davis was taken aback, not only by the fact of Nick's parents, but also the tantrum she had just heard from Jessica. She was about to speak when Jessica shocked them all again, grabbing her belongings and darting out the door. As she left, the door slammed so hard the walls rattled. Lexi, who had been sitting silently, in awe, the entire time quickly ran out the door after her friend.
"Where do you think you're going? This situation does not involve you in any way, Ms. Pittman." Mrs. Davis cried after Lexi, but Lexi payed her no mind and continued after Jessica...
When Lexi finally found Jessica, she was in the parking lot, frantically searching through her purse to find her car keys, tears still streaming from her eyes, but the hood was off her head and now laying clumsily on her back. Lexi ran over to her, and put her arm around Jessica's shoulder.
"Jess, its ok. They'll be fine. Nick's a strong guy, he'll get through it." she tried to console Jessica, who upon hearing that, collapsed against the car and started banging her fist on the door.
"No, no he wont. He needs me, Lex. I've gotta get to him." she cried, as she continued beating on the car. Lexi reach down and grabbed Jessica's purse from the ground where it had fallen when she collapsed onto the car, and rumaged through it for a few moments before pulling out Jessica's keys. She found the car key and shoved it in the lock. Jessica looked up and Lexi offered her purse to her. "Thanks, girl. I'm gonna go on out to the hospital now, I'll try to call you later tonight." Jessica sniffed, hopping into her car and starting it up. Lexi got back onto the sidewalk as Jessica's silver Range Rover pulled away...
Jessica pulled into the hospital and quickly parked her car in the parking lot in front of the main entrance. She took a left and ran down the hallway to the reception desk, where she saw Nick standing, leaned with his head against the wall.
"Nick!" she cried. Nick looked up and saw Jessica running toward him, he gave his best attempt at a smile.
"Hey Jess. What are you doing here? Aren't you going to be in trouble?" he asked, a little surprised to see Jessica there.
"I had to come to you, baby. Dont worry about me being in trouble, we'll talk about that later... how are they?" Jessica whispered, sorrow and hurt in her voice. Nick sighed, and Jessica was sure that for the first time in the 3 years she'd been dating him, she saw tears in his eyes.
"They're on life support... thats all I really know to say. It could go either way." Nick said, his voice shaky as he blinked back tears. "C'mon, I'll show you what room they're in."
The walk to Nick's parents' room was completely silent except for the 'ding!' of the elevator each time they p[arse]ed another floor. When they finally reached the 3rd floor, the two of them got off and walked, still silently, into room 318. There, Jessica saw a few of Nick's relatives, most of whom she had met before. They all gave Jessica a weak smile in greeting, and she smiled back, trying to stay strong for Nick and his family. Nick sat down in a chair next to the window and stared blankly out onto the street below.
"He's taking this so hard..." his aunt whispered to Jessica. It was true. She took another glance at Nick and saw a few tears trickle down his handsome face. This sight broke Jessica's heart. She felt bad for Nick, she honestly did.
"Yeah, he is. But I don't blame him, really." Jessica replied, not taking her eyes off her love. There was a long, awkward silence between everyone in the room. Jessica took a few steps and walked over to his uncle. "I'll take care of him." she whispered. The uncle nodded.
"You're probably the only one who can. Thanks, sweetheart. If you'll excuse us, we're gonna go get some coffee." he said, patting Jessica on the back as all the adults left the room. Nick looked up as he heard the door close, but quickly turned his head the other way again. Jessica pulled up a chair in front of him, placing her hand on his leg and rubbing it lovingly. Nick took her tiny hand in his and kissed it gently, looking Jessica in the eyes as he broke down in tears...
