I gave a little laugh, “Riiiiiight I’m sure you could’ve gone on all night if I’d let ya.”

“Oh Babe, I’m gettin’ old I couldn’t last as long as I used to.”

“Leave it to me to find an old fart to date.”

“Hey now, I’m only thirty.”

“Exactly,” I said laughing.

“But you said I wasn’t an old fart earlier.”

“Do you think we should go to bed?”

“I think we’re already in bed, Nicky,” I said teasingly.

“Yeah we probably should,” I said. Then I turned around and snuggled into his arms. Then I realized I was still stark naked, as was he. “Oops, I better get dressed.”

“Why, you’re sexy naked.”

“Yeah well it’s getting really sweaty under these sheets and I just don’t think I want to go to bed naked, so if you would kindly let me go, I’ll go put on some lingerie.”

“What are you trying to turn me on again?” he asked as I got up out of the bed.

“I thought you said you couldn’t go on,” I said facing him.

“Well I’m sure I could go for one more round,” he said sucking on his bottom lip as he looked me up and down.

“Oh stop it.”

“What? I need to burn this image into my mind ‘cause who knows if you’ll let me see it again any time soon.”

As I put them on he said, “Hey I thought you were putting on lingerie.”

“I changed my mind. I’m a woman it’s my prerogative to change my mind.”

I tossed him his underwear and then I crawled into bed as he sat on the edge to put them on. Then he laid down and put his arm around me. He kissed the top of my head and ran his hand over the side of my torso. “Nicky, you’re the best.”

“You are too, Beautiful. Better than you’ll ever know.” He heaved what sounded like a contented sigh and then said, “You know I love you, right?”

“Yes Nick I know, I love you too, now go to bed you silly man.”

“I’m in bed as you kindly reminded me earlier.”

“Oh you, fine then go to sleep.”

“I am, I am,” he said. Then he mumbled, “I love you, Angel.”

“I love you too, Handsome,” and then as quickly as I could remember I just blanked out into the darkness.

~Chapter 64~

After another day there, Monday arrived and it was time for Nick and I to get going so that we could spend a whole week with just each other. It was going to be so perfect. I couldn’t believe that we’d only been together for nine months. It felt like so much more than that. It was like I’d known him all my life and yet, we’d only had this little amount of time with one another. That morning we got ready to get going. Jeff and the kids had left to visit Rae that morning. Jeff was really finding comfort in being with Rae after everything that happened with Trish.

Justin left the day before to go see his girlfriend since they had talked and she had gone home early. Drew and Lea had left to go spend some time alone as well. So we got ready to leave that morning. We were going to say a last good bye to Rae as well as Jeff and the kids before Nick and I went back to Flagstaff. We got out of bed and got dressed. And then we started gathering things together. “Baby you got everything together?” I asked him from the bathroom as I picked up the clothes that had strayed.

“Yep, mostly everything anyway,” he said coming up behind me and wrapping his arms around my waist as he started to bump up against me a little bit. “Oh my God are you hot, all bent over like that. You turn me on so bad.”

“Oh Nick stop it,” I said standing up.

“Well Baby, we are here all alone. I mean no one would hear anything,” he said starting to kiss my neck.

“Nick really, do you want to do this now?”

“We’ll still have time to get to the airport.”

I turned around in his arms, “Nick you are so bad.”

“I can’t help it. It’s not my fault you’re so freakin’ hot.”

“Sure, it’s not Nick. I think you’re fabricating this look that you see. I mean I’m a perfectly normal woman.”

“God you’re a dork. But if we can get everything together within the next ten minutes, then I’ll give you what you want,” I said with a wink.

“Oh you got it Beautiful.” He then gave me a kiss and rushed out of the bathroom. I grabbed the last of the stuff that we had in the bathroom and went out to put it away. When I was out there he was sitting on the bed just staring at me. “I’m done. And we have lots of time before go time.”

“Oh my you do get motivated don’t you?”

“Don’t you know it.”

“Well I will be right there to give you your pleasure when I finish putting everything away.” So then after that I went to the bed and climbed on his lap. “Hmm, I think it’s time we get you out of these clothes. I think you are wearing entirely too much here, Darling.”

“I would have to agree. And I think that you are wearing too much as well Beautiful.”

“Hmm, what are we going to do about that Honey?” I asked with a grin.

“I think I have an idea,” he said. Then he started to lift my shirt up and off. “Oh God, you are so beautiful.”

I put a finger to his lips and said, “Shh, just kiss me hot stuff.”

“You don’t have to tell me twice,” he said as he kissed me. As he kissed me I started lifting his shirt as well. Then we parted for a brief moment as I got his shirt off of him. Then we proceeded to kiss some more. I felt his hands roaming over my back and then both hands landed on my bra as he tried to unclasp it. I could feel him fumbling around back there and I pulled away from him trying not to laugh, “It’s stuck,” he said.

“So much for being Mr. Experienced.”

“We’ve only spent half of yesterday doing this.”

“I’m still amazed this isn’t a dream.”

“Now if you were dreaming would we be stopping at the brink of making love?”

“Oh no, when I’m dreaming of this we make love all night long.”

“Well come here. We can get close enough,” I said wrapping my arms around his neck and pulling him close. Then we started in on our foreplay and did just about everything, but make love.

After about an hour later we were wiped out. We just laid in the bed holding each other. “That was incredible, Beautiful.”

“That it was Nicholas. You are an incredible man. Thank you for making me feel so wonderful.”

I just bought a new computer yesterday that luckily has the same word processing program as my old laptop. So if I am correct I should be able to save what I had of chapter 63 onto a disk and finish writing it on my new computer when I have the time. I am not making any promises about updating in the too near future, but sometime sooner than the next couple of months. Right now I really need to focus on making sure that Two Hearts is completely editted to perfection, before I can really worry about anything else. So then we went down to the lobby and checked out. Our first stop was to Rae’s place to say goodbye to everyone there. Then we headed to the airport. We checked our bags and then had to go through security again. I was hoping nothing would go wrong. Well Nick got through just fine it was me who set off the alarm this time. “Empty your pockets ma’am,” I was told.

So then I took out all of the things in my pocket and went through the detector again. Well when it went off again they decided to use the hand held metal detector to see what was going on. So they put it over me and it turned out my belt was the cause of the problems. So of course the first time I decide to wear a belt in forever and it has to cause me troubles.

But once we got through everything was fine. “Who knew it would be you to be the troublemaker this time my love,” Nick said as we started walking toward our gate.

“Oh shush you. It’s not my fault I wanted to be able to wear these pants without them falling off.”

“Sure it is honey you could’ve worn pants that fit you better.”

“Nick you know that none of my pants actually fit.”

“We need to go buy you some new clothes,” he said with a chuckle as we sat down.

“What why? I love my clothes. Besides haven’t we bought me enough these last few weeks?”

“And yet you choose to wear your old ones that are too big. But I love them too, especially when they make it easily accessible to what’s underneath.”

“Nick not in public.”

“Why not in public. Best way to let people know that I’m hot for your body.”

“Is that all you think about Nicholas?”

“Lately? Yes. Baby you don’t understand what your body does to mine. I mean ever since you let me see that beautiful body all naked and just oh my God I can’t get over it. And then when I think about what it’ll be like for us when we’re married I just…” he looked down and said, “look what you did.”

“Well,” he lifted my purse to look down, “it’s subsiding anyway. I won’t need it.”

“Are you sure you don’t want it for precaution sake?”

“Yea I’m sure. Just don’t get me thinking about how hot you are naked and I think I’ll be good.”

“Now who’s fault is that anyway? It certainly wasn’t mine you dork.”

After that we just sat there looking out the window at the planes going in and out. It felt nice sitting there in his arms like that not worrying about anything. It just drew in this calm serenity that I always seemed to feel when I was with him and him alone with not a care in the world about what was around us. Then after a while Nick broke the silence by saying, “What are you thinking about babe?”

“Oh just about how much I love you and about how I love being with you. I don’t know how I ever survived without you before you came along honey.”

“Well there’s something we both have in common honey,” he said kissing the top of my head.

“But then again we’ve got lots in common don’t we Nicky?”

“We certainly do babe.”

“Oh Nick we need to get our boarding passes honey.”

“Right let’s go get them now before there’s a long line for them later.” So we got up and got our boarding passes. Then we sat back down. Our plane wasn’t due to leave for another hour and a half. So we sat there and talked for a while. We also just sat in silence for a while too. Then, “Flight 5-6-2-5 to Flagstaff is now boarding, I repeat flight 5-6-2-5 is now boarding.”

“Well that’s us babe,” Nick said, “Ready for our getaway?”

“I’ve been looking forward to it honey.”

“So have I,” he said. Then we handed our boarding passes to the flight attendant and then walked toward the plane. “Our last plane trip in a long while now honey.”

“Yay, I don’t want to get sick of them. Although I don’t really think a week is long.”

“Okay well I guess that will be our last plane trip in a long while. You will, however, come summer time, get the chance to get sick of living on a bus,” Nick said with a chuckle as we took our seats.

“Oh joy,” I said sarcastically. We sat down, “But you’ll be there to make it more bearable won’t you?”

“Yeah, you’re gonna be our opening act for our summer tour.”

“That’s great Nicky. I just hope that I don’t screw it up. I mean it will be the first time I break away from just Arizona.”

“You’ll be fine honey. You’ve already wowed the crowds when you sang on TRL.”

“Well that’s what you say. You don’t know how I’ll really do until that CD comes out.”

“Well just a little while longer and I’ll prove to you that I’m right. You’re amazing and one of these days you’ll believe that. But even if you don’t it adds to your charm and beauty. I mean it keeps you from having a big head like some people I know.”

“Oh please don’t bring her up honey. She’s a part of your past let’s try to keep her out of this.”

“It’s just that looking back I’m not even quite sure why I ever even thought I was in love with her. I mean on top of that she just acted so high and mighty all the time like she was the greatest when she didn’t even do all that well when it came to trying to top the charts.”

“Nicholas, Darling there’s no need to be so cruel. In fact better yet if we don’t mention her at all we won’t have any problems so calm down there muchacho.”

“Muchacho?” he asked me amused.

“Yes muchacho you got a problem with that bub?”

“No. And have I ever told you how cute you are?”

“Oh shush you.”

“No really, I mean it’s just that you surprise me sometimes with the new things that you come up with. I have a feeling my whole life with you is in for a surprise.”

“You got that right. Why stick to the same old same old when you can change it up a little, I say.”

“I know how you feel honey.” Then after that we watched a few movies and I took a nap. I was so tired for some reason.

Eventually we arrived in Flagstaff. My car was waiting for us with quite the fee from parking, but it was really no big deal considering how much we were apparently both racking in. So then we left, but instead of heading toward our apartment we were going in another direction, “Nick where are we going?”

“Just wait and see. You’ll find out soon enough.”

“Well I thought we’d at least go home and get some other clothes for this surprise of yours.”

“Who needs clothes when we’re gonna be all alone,” he said with his devilish grin.

“Oh you. I’m not walking around where ever we’re going naked. You however can be as naked as a jay bird if you like. It’s too cold to be naked,”

“Oh I will be. And I think I can probably convince you to do the same. I know how to keep you warm.”

“Oh do you?”

“Mmm hmm. I can be pretty persuasive you know. Besides what’s a better way to stay warm than to be connected skin to skin?”

“Yes I know all about that. And I know all about how persuasice you can be too. But you know what? I can be pretty stubborn too.”

“I know and I absolutely love it.”

“You’re such a dork Nick you know that?”

“Only for you. You gave me the confidence to be the Emperor Dork that I am.”

“Hey now hold the phone.”

“What?”

“Who said you were the Emperor?”

“Well aren’t I? I mean I am with the Empress Dork.”

“That may be true but that doesn’t automatically give you the title,” I teased.

“Well then who’s the Emperor?”

“Nobody as of yet. The title still has to be earned.”

“And I haven’t earned it yet?”

“Not quite yet. You can have one of my kingdoms though,” I said with a smile.

“Aww, why can’t I be your emperor?”

“You will be one day.”

“I hope so.”

“Well as long as you don’t do anything to screw it up,” I said teasingly.

“I promise, there will be nothing in this world that could possibly keep me from making you my wife. I will make sure of it,” he said with an all too serious tone.

“Nick baby, that’s a promise you can try to keep but there are always unforeseen problems. But I know that you will try your best and I know that your best will be good enough. As long as we have love and trust, we’ll make it through anything,” I told him.

“You’re the best baby,” he said putting his hand on mine and rubbing the back of it with his thumb.

I rubbed his hand too and said, “No, you’re the best Nicholas.”

He quickly flashed me a smile and then we spent the rest of the hour and a half drive listening to the radio. We caught our song a couple of times station surfing and we caught my finally newly released single too. Eventually I just stayed on the country station and I sang along with what I knew. When a commercial came on after “There Is No Arizona” Nick said, “I’m glad there really is though. Without Arizona I wouldn’t have you. And the world wouldn’t get to share in that amazing voice of yours.”

“Oh Nick you give me too much credit.”

“I can’t help it you’re practically flawless every time you sing.”

“You’re such a dork Nick.”

“Only for you my love.” I started to laugh at him and then he said, “I love it when you smile, you just light up my whole world.

“And you’re such a beauty it’s hard not to be romantic. And my darling,” he said pulling into a driveway, “we’re here.”

I looked at the cabin. It was so beautiful, with a bit of a majestic feeling to it. “Oh my God, Nick this looks like…” I couldn’t finish my sentence but he knew what I was going to say.

“The cabin that you used to stay at when your aunt and uncle owned one here?” he finished for me.

I nodded my head and said, “Uh huh.” It looked exactly like the cabin that I used to spend my childhood Christmases at in Prescott.

“That’s ‘cause it is darling.”

“But how did you…?” I had no idea how he knew which cabin to get. I didn’t even know what happened to the cabin after my aunt and uncle no longer had it. I used to spend so many weekends playing here with my cousins. We built snowmen in the winter and ran down to the creek in the fall. I couldn’t believe it was still here.

“I have my ways my love, that’s all I have to say.”

“You’re incredible Nicky.” Then my phone rang, “Well who could that be?” I said as I picked up my phone. I looked at it and saw that it was my little sister, “Hi,” I said answering it.

“Hi, how come you’re not down here?” she asked me.

“Well you just get right to the point don’t you?”

“Well it’s why I called you. Besides I haven’t seen you in a while it’s a good question.”

“I’m sorry munchkin. I’ve just been caught up in so much around here and in my life that I needed to take a break with Nick. But I promise we’re gonna go down there after the New Year.”

“Well why can’t you come over here for New Year’s?” she asked.

“Well I have to be somewhere for New Year’s,” I said.

“Where are you going?”

“Well I have to be in New York for the Times Square ball drop. I’m one of the performers this year.”

“You are? Cool. Can I go?”

“Oh sweetie,” I started. Hmm, I thought, why can’t she go? She’s never really been outside of AZ other than California and this would be a great chance for her to get out. And maybe I can take Mel to keep her company. “You know what munchkin that’s a great idea. We’ll even bring Melanie how does that sound?”

“Awesome.”

“Just don’t freak out on the plane. It’s a private jet actually so there won’t be people around for you to bother with and it’s really nice.”

“Even cooler. I’ll call Mel up about it.”

“That’s great. We’ll talk about it more as the time gets closer all right?”

“Okay. I love you.”

“Love you too munchkin. And happy birthday. Sorry I can’t be there for you now.”

“It’s okay New York will more than make up for it.”

I smiled, “Good. I’ll talk to you soon bye,”

“Bye,” she said. Then I hung up the phone.

“Darn,” Nick said.

“What?” I asked turning to look at him.

“I wanted to add some more miles to my mile high club card.”

“You know you actually have to have sex in the air to be a part of that club. Are you telling me one, that you already are a card carrying member of the mile high club and two, that you were expecting me to have sex with you on the way to New York this time?”

“I…I…well I… mean.”

“Nick is it really hard for you to answer this question?” I asked him cocking one of my eyebrows at him.

“Okay well. Yes I am a card carrying member, but it was just once.”

“Really? Who with?”

“Well it wasn’t so much as a who as it was with a what?”

“Okay never mind I don’t want to know,” I said laughing.

“If it makes you feel any better I was thinking of you.”

“Somehow that just kind of makes me feel weirder,” I said giggling. I had a pretty good idea that he felt he needed to really keep his hands to himself on that plane ride.

“Okay, well sorry, I can’t help it. And I’m not the only man in this world who has given himself some self loving to the thought of you I’m sure.”

“Oh God Nick. Okay I’m done with this,” I said laughing. I opened up the car door and ran toward the cabin. When I reached it I realized I was being a bit hasty when I couldn’t open the door, I forgot that I would probably need a key to get in. Then moments later Nick was bounding down toward me with a suitcase in one hand a key to the cabin in the other. He opened the door and I stepped in. It was exactly as I remembered it. The living room stood before me and a staircase leading to a top floor was to my right. Even the couches were the same leather ones I remembered from my childhood, set angling in a half diamond shape before me. Behind the living room area was the dining room and to the right of the dining room area was the kitchen. I walked through the living room running my hand across the leather. When I looked to my left I saw the fireplace that warmed the cabin up so many nights in the cold. And right beside it was the most gorgeous tree I’d ever seen. And beneath it were boxes wrapped to look like presents. I had to smile. There was no way they were all presents underneath that tree and they certainly couldn’t all be for me. Then again Nick did have his ways.

Then I wandered to my right to the hallway. The first door to my right was a door to the basement/entertainment area then the next door to my right was the bathroom the door to my left was a linen closet. I kept walking and reached two bedrooms one to my right and one to my left. I turned around and discovered Nick right behind me. Without actually looking though I sort of bumped into him and gasped at the feel of his body up against mine. I laughed at my moment’s fear, “Dork,” I said, “you didn’t have to be so close.”

“Sure I did. I wanted to see your reaction to everything and it’s kind of like a tour for me.”

“Riiiiight.”

“So how did I do?” he asked.

“You did good babe, you did good. And what do you mean by tour? You didn’t look at this place before you rented it?”

“I bought it actually and I just looked at the outside of it to make sure that it wasn’t like completely abandoned looking. Besides I mean I knew you’d love it. And I sent some other people in to come and make sure everything was okay.”

“Oh you wonderful man. I can’t believe you did this all for me. Although I did always have a problem with all of these windows.”

“Not a problem first thing tomorrow morning we’ll go buy really dark curtains.”

I smiled at him. “Oh my.” Then I kissed him and said, “I’ll race you upstairs.” And I jetted off out of the hallway around the corner and to the staircase. I reached the top and screamed, “I win.”

“No you don’t,” he countered. “You cheated.”

“Me? Cheat? Nevah. And I mean that in more ways than one,” I said.

“First of all what-evah,” he said mocking me and then he said, “Yeah I know.” He stood beside me wrapping his arms around my waist. “Merry Christmas baby.”

“Merry Christmas honey bunch. So this is an early Christmas present then?” I asked looking up at him.

“Sort of, the rest of your presents come later.”

“Really?”

“Yeah huh,” he said nodding his head.

“Well then I can’t wait. Although I do feel kind of bad missing my sister’s birthday today.”

“Isn’t that what taking her to New York is for?”

“Yeah I know, but still. I haven’t missed one of her birthdays since she was born.”

“Babe, if she’s okay with it, you should be too.”

“Well you do have a point there,” I conceded.

“Good. Now we can let our week begin.”

“I can’t wait,” I said with a smile before kissing him.

~Chapter 65~

The week went by far too fast for me. It just felt like one day ran into the next and before I knew it my week with my honey was over and we were packing up getting ready to drive down to Phoenix to pick up my sister and my cousin to catch our plane to New York.

Our first night there we spent the entire time in the bed upstairs. That top floor was more like an open attic than anything yet it was made to look like a bedroom with carpeting and a closet. It was so spacious. The only time we left the upstairs “room” was to go downstairs to eat dinner and to take a shower. Which although was already steamy from the heat of the water, it got even hotter when Nick decided he couldn’t wait to take his and joined me. After that we went back upstairs to watch some movies that Nick had told his caretaker to leave for us and we cuddled and worked off some calories.

The next day we went out into the town to get some groceries. Our dinner the night before was actually ordered-in pizza. So we went out and picked up a few things to help last us for a week. We didn’t want to have to order any more for the week. Nick decided he hadn’t been using his culinary skills for a while so he was gonna show off while he had the chance. After we dropped of the groceries and put everything away we went out to go get some curtains for the windows. I counted them all before we left and headed out. I counted two of the sliding door/windows, eight of the half windows (one of them was like two together so it was more like nine), and three of the like quarter windows and I wanted curtains for each and every one of them, including a window on one of the doors. So we did just that. Once we bought all of the curtains we were gonna need plus a few extra just in case, as well as the rods we were going to use to hang them, we went back to the cabin and put them up. By the time we got everything done it was time for lunch. And chef Lachey was just wiped so we ended up eating sandwiches for lunch.

After that we watched a couple of more movies and then we went down to the basement to play some pool. Nick bought us a pool table for the basement. It wasn’t quite the same as playing bumper pool with my cousins, but fun just the same, well maybe even more so. We actually played strip pool, so that definitely made it better than my younger days, not that I would have wanted to see my cousins naked or anything, you know what I mean. I kicked butt, but to be fair I ended up stripping and we went “skinny” dipping in the hot tub. We sat in the tub and just talked away about our future and our past and what we were going to do within the next year. We talked about our lives as a romantic couple and our lives as business partners in the world of music. It was great, especially not having to worry about people bothering us. No one knew where we were and we turned off our cell phones. We figured if anyone had anything important to say they could just leave a message and we’d check them at night before going to bed.

After our time in the tub we wandered to the kitchen and I got to watch the naked chef. He made us some chicken, and then I made us some mashed potatoes and grabbed a can of green beans from the cabinet we put all of our canned food in. Then once the chicken was done we ate. We ate in peaceful silence, smiling at one another with each progressive bite. A few times I just stopped eating and just stared at him as he ate. I couldn’t help myself he was just too cute. “What?” he’d ask me as he caught me watching him. I would reply with a simple nothing and continue eating myself.

After we ate we washed the dishes together and then raced upstairs. We laid in the bed together just holding one another underneath the blankets and watched the TV together. We flipped through the channels and we put in another one of the movies. After a while Nick got horny and we started having some fun. After that we were both wiped out and fell asleep.

The rest of the week was pretty much like that. There were a few variable changes like breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the activities of the day, such as whether or not we played pool (we spent every day in the hot tub), there were a few oil massages mixed in there as well. Another variable was whether or not we even watched a movie or even the TV, and who decided to be the first to initiate our roll in the hay, and whether or not we both fell asleep or if it was just one while the other either watched the sleeping one or watched the TV.

Oh and of course I can’t forget Christmas. I woke up and discovered Nicholas not in the bed. I was frantic, sort of. I got up and ran downstairs. Usually when I woke up he was lying beside me staring at me or still sleeping. So I went downstairs to see if maybe he was just in the bathroom or something. I found Nick in the kitchen, however, making breakfast. “Good morning Beautiful,” he said as he spotted me. “I wasn’t expecting you up just yet.”

“Well I rolled over and you weren’t there so I had to see what was going on.”

“Well breakfast is almost ready and your barrage of presents is ready to be opened.”

“My barrage of presents? You can’t tell me that all of those presents over there are seriously for me.”

“Well not all of them, but the majority of them are.”

“I thought all of that was just a Christmas Holiday decorating technique.”

“Well some of it is, but quite a few of it are gifts.”

“Oh, I feel so bad. The only gifts I have for you are in the car.”

“In the car? Where? I haven’t seen them.”

“You never lifted the trunk, dork. Why do you think I told you to just put everything in the back seat?”

“For accessibility?”

“That and I didn’t want you to see your gifts. And with all the time we’ve been spending together I haven’t had a chance to bring them in and put them under the tree.”

“Well I’ll finish up here. Why don’t you go get them?”

“All right. Let me run upstairs and get dressed.”

“What a shame,” he said shaking his head.

I just smiled at him and ran upstairs. I grabbed my winter jacket and a pair of sweat pants and put them on before going back downstairs to go to the car. I opened up the trunk and grabbed the four gifts I had for him. Two of them came in the mail for him from my family and two of them were gifts I had for him. I also grabbed the gifts that my family sent to me. Then I went back inside the cabin and set the presents under the tree.

I walked back to the dining room table just as Nick was setting down the rest of the plates. “My, isn’t this the Christmas morning spread?” I asked looking down at the plates of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages, and pancakes. “You realize I can only eat so much.”

“All right you got me,” I said sitting down.

“There’s something wrong here,” Nick said sitting beside me.

“What’s that?” I asked picking up the plate that he set down for me.

“I’m naked and you’re not. This just isn’t right.”

“Oh no? What do you suppose we do about that? Should you get dressed perhaps?” I teased.

“Oh no, I think you should get undressed.”

“Now why would I do that?”

“Well we have the curtains up, no one can see us and you’ve been happy with it for the past couple of days.”

“You do make a persuasive argument, I suppose. Besides getting undressed right here would be faster than you running upstairs for clothes wouldn’t it?”

“See you make a good point too.”

“All right I’ll concede, but only because I’m starving and I know you won’t let up until something happens.” So I took off my clothes and we ate our food.

After breakfast, which was eaten without a morsel left over – mostly by Nick, mind you – we washed the dishes and headed for the presents. We separated them into sort of his and her piles. Mine was huuuuge. I’d never seen so many presents for Christmas for just myself before. I was baffled.

“Nicholas did you get all of these gifts for me?”

“Well a lot of them. If you’ll notice there are a few gifts from the rest of the fam in there.”

“Oh baby I feel so bad that I only have two presents for you from me.”

“But they’ll be two gifts that I’ll cherish forever because they’re from you.”

“You say that now, wait until you open them.”

“By the way how long have you had that Christmas stash in your car?”

“From right before we left Flagstaff. Now enough chit chat let’s open,” I said excited to see what he got for me. I opened up the big box first. When I opened it all I got was a big box. I was beginning to think Nick was playing a joke with me with fake presents and things. I gave him one of those “what is this look” and he motioned for me to open the box. I lifted it to make sure I wasn’t going to find nothing and it definitely was filled with something and something heavy at that. I took a deep breath and took the top off. Inside I found a bunch of little wrapped gifts. “What’s going on Nicholas? Am I going to open these and find more things I’m going to have to open like those never ending unwrapping gift things?”

“No, no,” he said laughing and shaking his head. “Just open them.”

“Okay,” I said. I took one out and immediately knew I held a book in my hand, I just didn’t know which one. I unwrapped the first one and then the next and the next and the next and the next and so on. I found the entire Nicholas Sparks collection and the entire Harry Potter collection up to that point. I loved it. “Oh Nicky,” I said giving him a hug, “thank you so much.”

“You’re welcome baby. I just figured you’d need something to read during the tour.”

I laughed at him. “Boy do you make it sound like it’s going to be long.”

“It will be, and you’re gonna have to do something on that bus with me and the guys.”

“I have something to do.”

“What’s that?” he asked me.

“Kick your guys’ butts at Playstation,” I said sticking my tongue out.

“Oh I’ll get you for that,” he said smiling.

“No you won’t. Okay now that I’ve opened a present it’s your turn.”

“Okay,” he said rubbing his hands together, “let’s see what you got me.”

I stopped him before he opened the present he first grabbed and said, “Now before you open that I have to warn you it wasn’t very expensive and well it’s not like totally amazing or anything. With that said you may proceed.”

He smiled at me and said, “Anything from you I would categorize as amazing.” He tore the wrapping paper off and discovered a box. He opened the box and found the gift. It was a scarf that I knitted especially for him. I had a lot of time on my hands during the school time. “A scarf?” he asked.

“See I knew you wouldn’t like it.”

“You don’t sound too sure about that.”

“No it’s great. How much did this cost you? It looks expensive.”

“Ha ha very funny honey. You know I made it.”

“You did? When did you have the time and when did you learn how to knit?”

“I learned how to knit when I was like twelve from my grandma.”

“I never knew that.”

“You never asked. It’s hard to believe since we’re such connected souls that there’s still so much that we don’t know about each other.”

“I guess you’re right. And I love it. I’m gonna wear it when we’re in New York,” he said with a smile.

“You don’t have to do that. It’s not that great.”

“No I swear I love it. And I’m going to wear it.”

“If you say so,” I said smiling back at him. At that moment I truly realized how lucky I really was to have such a wonderful man in my life.

Then we continued opening our gifts.

I received snow globes and CD’s galore. Nick got clothes from everyone else and his other gift from me was a watch engraved with “Love Always, Beautiful.” Then after our presents fest we called up our families and wished them all a Merry Christmas. Then we called up friends and then we turned off our phones. After that we spent the rest of the day lounging around the house as if it were a usual day.

Then around dinner time we went out to eat and then we drove around looking at the lights of Prescott. It was so beautiful. I loved looking at show lights, still do. I think it’s more the creativity of the people that captivate me more than the actual lights themselves, but then again I’m also drawn to bright and shiny objects as well. I feel like such a kid sometimes.

I glanced over at Nick while we stopped in front of this extravagant house and I just found him staring at me. “What is it now Nicky?” I asked.

“Nothing.”

“Oh come on what are you thinking about?”

“You,” he said with a smile.

“Me?” I asked. “What about me?”

“About how beautiful you look in the glow of these lights.”

I just rolled my eyes at him, “Oh what-ever.”

“Don’t whatever me, you know you look good.”

“Yeah right. It’s probably because the lighting makes it hard for you to see me,” I said sticking out my tongue at him.

“Hey watch what you do with that tongue or you might get a surprise.”

“Oh just drive on oh dorky one.”

“As you wish.” So we drove on. And when we ran out of places to go we returned to our cabin. Then we ran upstairs got undressed and hid under the covers watching Christmas movies until we fell asleep. It was one of the best Christmases I ever had.

“I can’t believe our week is over,” I said as I was putting our things into the one bag we brought in with us.

“I know I can’t either. But you know Babe, it’s not like we can’t ever come back. I did buy this place after all.”

“I know you did, but still this week has been magical,” I said finishing up. I turned around and looked up into his beautiful crystal blue eyes. “You have been magical. I couldn’t have asked for a better week getaway except for it to be longer. But I guess it’s time I finally got a chance to see my family again right?”

“Yeah I think so.”

I took a deep breath and walked over to the railing to look out over the rest of the cabin. “I’ve had so many memories built on this place, and I’m just so glad that now I got to share them with you.”

He had followed me over to the railing and wrapped his arms around my waist, “I’m glad I got to help you build some new memories here as well, my love.”

“There is one thing I regret though.”

“What’s that?” he asked sounding concerned.

“Oh it’s nothing like that honey. I just wish that we had actually gotten out of the cabin once or twice to build some snowmen or had a snowball fight or something in the snow. I mean I know we have snow back in Flag, but it’s just not the same ya know?”

“Yeah. Well it’s not too late ya know.”

“Hmm, maybe. Let’s take the bag to the car and make sure we didn’t miss anything in the fridge or the cupboards before we do anything else.”

“Honey I promise we left nothing, we don’t even have anything for breakfast. The only left over things we have we can take on the trip.”

“And the leftovers are…?”

“Chips.”

“Figures. All right I guess we can go grab those. Do we happen to have any sodas left over?”

“Nope we’re going to have to stop and get some on our way out.”

“Gotcha. Okay well you go grab the chips and I’ll go put this in the car and then we can make sure that everything else is shut off and all that good stuff after we make sure we have everything picked up that we’re taking with us.”

“Sounds good to me.” I turned around and gave him a kiss before walking back to our packed bag, which was barely unpacked to begin with. Nick was already downstairs getting the chips. We met up at the front door and walked to the car to put everything away.

“Maybe we should get the car started honey,” I suggested. I knew the cold weather warranted the car needing to be heated up before leaving and I really didn’t want to sit and wait in it.

“Nah it’s all right, we can do it during our snow-a-thon.”

I gave him a weird look and said, “Riiiiiight.”

“What?”

“Nothing,” I said shaking my head at him. “Let’s just get back inside to make sure that nothing’s running that shouldn’t be and that the place is set for us to leave.”

“All right.” We walked back into the cabin hand-in-hand. We knew we didn’t have to worry about the upstairs, I packed up the movies that were up there and there was nothing up there that could be on without us readily knowing it, so we didn’t double check up there. We wandered around on the “ground” floor making sure all the light switches were off although we hadn’t wandered around there too much. We made sure that everything in the basement was squared away; we covered up the hot tub basically. Then we went back up the stairs and put out the fireplace fire and we locked the front door and went out.

We walked to the car and Nick started the car and I was about to step in when Nick said, “I hope the only reason you’re getting in is to find your gloves.”

“Were you serious?”

“Of course, I was dead serious. I don’t want you going away from this place with any regrets.”

Then I had to give a smirk. “In that case you wouldn’t happen to have a sled with you would you?” I figured if I could milk this out I was going to take a sled to the top of the hill of the driveway entrance and slide down to the car.

“Now you didn’t tell me to bring one of those.”

“Well I didn’t know that this is where you were going to bring me.”

“Okay well I guess we can save that for another time. But we can still make your snowmen, but I’m not so sure about the snowball fight.”

“What’s the matter are you chicken?”

“Who? Me? Chicken? About what? I have nothing to be afraid of from you little girl.” I grabbed my gloves from the glove compartment (imagine that the glove compartment was actually being used for its actual use) and shoved them on. I dashed over to a clump of snow and grabbed some and threw it at him. And boy did it feel good. “Oh you’re gonna get it now babe.”

“Prove it,” I retorted. I started grabbing tons of snow and making a whole bunch of little snowballs for easy access. I wanted to be able to pelt them at him as fast as possible even if they weren’t very big or very good. But they did their job. I missed him a couple of times, but I got him a couple of times good. He got me back a few times too, with bigger snowballs, but since his took longer for him to make, I got a few more shots in at him.

Eventually he came ramming toward me and just jumped on me and said, “All right babe, it’s time to call a truce.”

“Why? Getting tired, old man?”

“Who you calling old?” he asked tickling me. Only it didn’t work quite as well because I was covered in thick layers of jackets.

“You. But okay I’ll call a truce. I wanna get a snowman built and then we really gotta get going we’re starting to run out of time.”

“All right babe.”

“That means you can get off of me now honey.”

“Oh right,” he said trying to get up. Once he was up he pulled me up too.

“That was fun,” I said giving him a kiss.

“Yeah it was. You have one hell of an arm though. I never knew you could throw like that. You don’t throw like a girl at all.”

“Uh thanks, I think.” Then I walked toward the car.

“What are you doing honey? I thought we were going to make our snowman, or rather snowchild.”

“Oh you hush. And I’m just getting a camera to take a picture of it is all. Why don’t you go get started?”

“All right,” he said heading over to the deck. It was where the most snow had accumulated over the past couple of weeks.

I grabbed my camera and headed on over to him to help him out. After the base was done we had a heck of a time getting the middle part done and then lifting it, without breaking it, to put on top of the base. The head was a lot easier to do. After that we searched around for some thick branches to use as arms and then found some twigs and pebbles to make up his face. After that I took a picture of Nick standing next to it and then he took one of me standing next to it and then I put the timer on and let the camera take a picture of the three of us together. Luckily the last picture came out great and I didn’t have to worry about taking another one, ‘cause I was afraid if I tried leaving it there on the edge of the deck railing and adjusting the camera it was going to fall and I really didn’t want to have to search for it.

After our snow-a-thon, we went back to the car and headed out. We made one pit stop, before actually hitting the highway, for drinks and one more bathroom break. Then we got on the highway and high-tailed it to Phoenix. I made a call to my sister to find out where she was and to let her know that the two of us were on the way. “Oh my God I’m not ready yet,” she said.

“Well you better get ready. And just so you know young one this is your birthday present and your Christmas present so you better have fun.”

She laughed and said, “Well I figured since I didn’t get my presents yet…”

“Yeah well you better be ready by the time we get there munchkin ‘cause we gotta head on out to the airport as soon as we get there. Is Mel with you by chance?”

“She is actually.”

“So why aren’t you packed?”

“The time just went by too fast.”

“Excuses, excuses,” I teased. “But we’ll be there in about an hour, maybe less so we’ll see you then all right?”

“All right cool. I’ll be ready by then I promise.”

“You better be.”

“Love you too Jenny.”

I smiled, she was one of the few that could get away with calling me that. “I love you too, bye.”

“Bye,” she said. Then we hung up.

~Chapter 66~


The ride on the jet was so cool. It was the first time I’d ever been on a private one, even since I’ve been with Nick. What was really neat about it was that it didn’t have regular chairs, it had like couches to sit on, and believe it or not, the ride felt smoother than when I rode in regular planes. Then again, it could’ve just been a mental thing and the skies were probably clearer than usual. Even my sister who was afraid of planes relaxed on the ride. Then again, when money is involved in the games, who can dwell on the location?

We played this Laotian card game called Tham Daang, roughly translated it means Card Red, or Red Card. The object of the game is to get as many red cards as possible the higher the numbers the better. Although it’s not as easy as it sounds, and it’s a good mixture of skill and luck, I think. In any case, it’s a game that I love playing with my family. Although sometimes it gets too competitive since, like I said money is on the line.

Anyway, we played this game for a while. I won about twenty bucks overall, my sister won ten and so did my cousin, therefore you guessed it my darling Nicholas lost forty. It doesn’t sound like much, but it’s not as if we were playing to get money to save our lives. Anyway, Nick’s loss was probably a result of the fact that he didn’t have the hang of the game yet. I mean me, my sister, and my cousin have all been playing the game for years.

After we played Tham Daang, we played a game called SET. There was no money involved this time, just pure unadulterated competitiveness. I first discovered the game two and a half years prior as a high school junior in my math class during a free period of doing well nothing. Actually, I believe she designated the hour to games for us, a break from all the hard work we’d been doing. Anyway, she had the game and introduced it to a few friends and me and I was hooked. I had to go and get it. Then I proceeded to teach my other friends, my sister, and my cousin. Those two were the only others I could get hooked, until Nick came along. Although he wasn’t very good at that either.

The game is all about perceptions. It uses three different shapes (diamonds, squiggles, and ovals), fillings (solid, empty, and shaded), colors (red, green, and purple), and numbers of the shapes (one, two, and three). The object of the game is to find a “set”. A set consists of three cards that have a commonality or a difference in each of the four categories. To do this you first place twelve cards out of the eighty-one face up. Then once a set is found someone says, “Set” and picks up their set. They show it to everybody to make sure there’s an agreement of the set unless everyone’s really good and it can be seen as they pick up the cards. If it’s not a set, they put it back and you keep looking. Then if a set is found you replace the three and continue ‘til the deck runs out. If at any point in the game a set cannot be found in the twelve and there are still cards left in the deck the dealer will put three more down making the total number of cards facing up fifteen. But after a set is found from the fifteen no cards will replace those unless the set was the three cards that made the fifteen. And then of course when all the cards have been gone through you count how many sets you have and the one with the most is the winner. Boy do I sound like an instruction book.

Anyway, I won quite a few rounds of those. I usually do against those two, but they’re getting better. They even beat me a few times as well. It was mostly because Nick had to be Mr. Distracting to me. But like I said, they were getting better at the game. After a while, Nick and I decided to take a break from playing SET with the girls and we went to the back of the plane and just talked. We needed to discuss a real date for the wedding. We’d been engaged for about half a year already and had no idea when we wanted to actually get married. Since I was just teasing him about the two-year thing, we really needed to figure it out.

“So I was thinking a summer wedding,” I said.

“Summer? Why so late? Why not spring?”

“That’ll only give me like three months to plan it,” I said.

“I bet if you put your mind to it you could do it,” he said.

“I guess, but it wouldn’t be the wedding that I’ve always wanted probably. I mean think about it honey. All the great things that I need to get together, like the caterer, location, flower arrangements, the dresses for my girls everything, in only three months? Most things take at least a half a year in advance to reserve.”

“Yeah, but people will accommodate us early.”

“Oh do you really think that our ‘celebrity’ status is really going to get us special treatment in this case.”

“Well duh honey.”

“But I don’t want to do things like that. I wanna be able to go through this as if we were normal people, because as far as I know I’m still normal. I don’t feel like a celebrity and I don’t really want to do this celebrity style either. And I want to make sure that everything goes off without a hitch. I also want to be able to involve my friends and family in the planning and that they all have enough time to make sure they can make it to the wedding. And I can’t give them such short notice for that.”

“But honey people get married every day in a hurry, we could do that too. It’s considered normal.”

I gave a sigh. “Well how about we try and figure out a location, see how accommodating it is to a date and then work everything else around that. I mean as far as caterers go, we can always have my family do it,” I said with a wink.

“That’s not a bad idea actually.”

I just gave him a smile. “You really wouldn’t mind?”

“Why should I? If I get to marry you sooner rather than later, why the heck not?”

“I guess that would work.”

“So where were you thinking of getting married then babe?”

“Okay, I know that this is going to sound kind of silly. But I was thinking that maybe, we could get married at Disney…land?” I asked hesitantly.

“That sounds perfect babe!” he exclaimed.

“Really? How about maybe even Disneyworld? ‘Cause most of my family has never been and we could treat them to the park and everything for a week before the wedding.”

“Whatever you want babe. And I’m willing to bet they’d have an opening sometime.”

“And maybe we could work a Disney special into the mix to sweeten the deal. That way we could make up for closing the park down for a night.”

“You have a great way of thinking babe,” Nick said.

“Why thank you,” I replied. “You really think this is a great idea?” I asked. Then I started speed talking, “You don’t think that I’m crazy and out of my mind to want to do this. Because I’ve looked this type of thing up before and people really do have weddings at Disneyland and Disneyworld. I just think it would be so great because I could finally be like a princess, you know? What with the castle in the background and all that good stuff.” Then I took a deep breath.

“No baby it’s a fabulous idea. And as far as I’m concerned you’re always a princess,” he said right before giving me a kiss.

“Yay,” I said hugging him tight after the kiss. Then I went back to the girls and announced it. “Girls, we’re getting married in Disneyworld!”

“Awesome,” they said in unison. They got up to give me a hug.

“So now it’s time to do some planning.”

“Shouldn’t you be planning with your maid of honor?” my sister asked.

“Well I mean I’ve gotta take care of what I can right now, because who knows when I’ll be able to get a wedding date there.”

“You mean you guys haven’t decided on a date yet?” Mel asked.

“Well we need to find out when Disneyworld can squeeze us in.”

“How hard is that going to be?” Jelena asked. “I mean how many people can afford to have a wedding in such a big place?”

“That’s a good point, but some people save their whole lives to be able to spend a good amount on the wedding of their dreams. I can’t believe that I’ve gotten to a point in my life where I don’t have to worry about that sort of thing. Also we’re going to arrange it so that everyone who can will be able to spend a whole week before the wedding out there having the whole experience since most of us haven’t been out there.”

“Oh you are the best big sister EVER!” Jelena exclaimed as she gave me another hug.

“Thanks,” I said with a laugh. “So I guess that does kind of limit when we can have the wedding. It of course would have to be a time when people will be able to go without worry. For the adults they’re gonna need to take vacation time from work if they can and the kids can’t be out of school so for that I was thinking spring break week, if we do spring. And if not spring, maybe the week right after everyone gets off for the summer. What do you guys think?”

“We get to help choose your wedding day?” my sister asked in disbelief.

“Of course why not? You guys are going to be there too, so you might as well help me choose when it’s going to be.”

“Well then I’d rather wait for school to be out so that I don’t have to worry about homework while I’m there. Plus you know that at school we always go on a spring break trip.”

“Very true. Do you think they’ll let me go as a chaperone?” I asked giving my sister a wink.

“Are you kidding? You’ll make me the most popular girl in school.”

“Honey you know I meant as your big sister, not as pop sensation Izzy.”

“Oh, yeah. Well it’ll still be fun.”

I finally turned my head to look at Nick. He had been oddly quiet during our rantings. He just stared at me with a smile on his face. “And what do you have to say about all this Sir Nick?” I asked.

“Just that I love seeing you so happy and excited. I love you so much,” he said getting up to sit next to me. “And I think spring break would be a great idea.”

“Going on the trip or having the wedding.”

“I’d love to have the wedding then, but I understand. Can I at least go on the trip with you?”

“Honey I don’t know if they’d let you. But if they do you’re going to have to be undercover and I’m not so sure they’d let us be together in a room.”

“Then why don’t we just plan our own trip to Cali to coincide with theirs?”

“I suppose we could do that. But Honey, I hardly ever get to see my sister and I think it would be so great if I could have a girls' night with her and her friends. It would just be a few nights, it’s not like we’ve never done it before.”

“Well it is still three months away,” he said trying not to give in.

“You know as well as I do that I’m right.”

“I know, but I don’t want to think of it.”

I just smiled and turned back to the girls. “So what color do you think your dresses should be? I was thinking blue.”

“What color blue?” Jelena asked.

“I’m not really sure yet. I think it might be easier to narrow it down after looking at some fabrics and seeing which ones would fit the wedding better.”

“That sounds like a good idea,” she said.

Then the girls and I spent the rest of the trip talking about some of the wedding plans. Nick was sitting and just patiently listening, interjecting when he thought something didn’t sound quite right. But of course I changed his mind *wink, wink*. Actually, the only thing he really had a problem with was the amount of bridesmaids I was going to have. He wasn’t so sure he could find that many groomsmen to match up with each of my bridesmaids. I told him we could figure it out. I mean I couldn’t give up my bridesmaids; they were my bridesmaids for a reason. Other than that, Nick quietly sat and agreed to what we had to say.

So we came up with writing our own vows and having the wedding in Disneyworld sometime in the summer when at least the kiddies didn’t have to worry about school. Other than that, we pretty much decided that calling Disneyworld would be the only way to get through much of the wedding stuff. I had done research in the past on weddings by Disney and discovered they help with nearly everything. I think the only thing they wouldn’t be able to help with were the clothes.

After we arrived at the airport, we had a chauffeur waiting to take us to our hotel. We got a two-bedroom suite. One room for the girls and one for Nick and me obviously. Once we settled into our suite we all got changed and prepared for a night out on the town.

First, we went to find some place to eat. Then we went to see a Broadway musical, The Lion King. I had seen it once before, but not on Broadway. It was so amazing. Actually seeing it off-Broadway wasn’t really that un-amazing. But I think it had a lot to do with the magic of being in New York and actually watching something on Broadway. It was definitely an experience I would never forget.

For the next couple of days the four of us went sight seeing. We traveled all over the place. We even managed to make a trip up north to Niagara Falls. It was so beautiful. So many picture-taking views. And the shopping, you wouldn’t believe how many bags of STUFF I walked away with. The girls sure had a lot of fun getting to buy things too, on my dime of course. But what’s the point in having money if you can’t spoil the ones you love?

Anyway, New Year’s Eve finally arrived and I had to prepare for my performance. “I don’t know what to wear,” I said trying to look through my stuff.

“Uh are you crazy?” my sister asked staring at me like I was crazy. “You just bought like hundreds of dollars in clothes and you say you have nothing to wear.”

“Well…uh,” I said with a slight smirk on my face. “Well Nick what type of outfit do you think I should wear?”

“Wear anything you want honey, I think you look great in whatever you wear.”

“You are most helpful my love……NOT!” I said with a giggle.

So I kept rifling through my stuff and decided on a glittered red spaghetti strapped top with a v-neck and form fitting black bell-bottom pants with slits on the sides.

I went into the bedroom and changed. I came back out and posed for them. “Perfect,” Mel said.

“I agree,” Jelena said. “You’re gonna rock tonight sister.”

“Uh huh,” Nick said. “You are going to blow them all away tonight.”

“I’m so nervous. I’ve never done anything this big before. I mean so many people are gonna be watching me perform. And I heard that not only is TRL filming this, but ****’s Rockin’ New Year’s Eve is too. Do you know how unnerving that is? I just wanna make sure that I get this right.”

“Honey, you have nothing to worry about. I know you’ll be able to do this. In fact I know you’ll be perfect.”

“I think sometimes you have far too much faith in me.”

“Never,” he said before kissing me.

“Awwww,” Mel and Jel said in unison.

After that our lips parted and a smile crossed my lips in a shy, oops I forgot you were there kind of manner. “Oh shut it you guys.”

We all laughed. “Well you two are just too cute sometimes,” Jelena said. “I can’t wait until you guys have a baby. It’s gonna be so cute.”

“Hey now I’m just trying to make it to the altar at this point,” I said.

“Well I can’t wait ‘til we have a baby,” Nick said squeezing me tighter.

“We will talk about that on the honeymoon,” I whispered in his ear. Then I gave him a peck on the cheek before I had him let me go. “All right girls go get dressed we gotta get to the party soon.”

“Oh god this is so cool,” Jelena squealed as the girls went into their room to get dressed.”

“Thank you,” I told Nick.

“For what?”

“For letting me bring the girls to this whole thing. I know it’s something they will never forget. And I will never forget you letting me bring them.”

“Honey you don’t need to thank me, you know that. They’re gonna be my family someday I’ve gotta get used to being around them don’t I? I just want to make you happy. Besides I love those girls, they’re so much fun. And I see how happy you are around them. I love seeing you with them. You seem so much more comfortable so much more like you can handle anything.”

“You are just too much for me Mr. Lachey. You are too perfect. I really think you could be a robot, but robot or not, I’m not so sure that I deserve you and everything that you do for me.”

“You deserve all this and more.”

Then as I was about to kiss him again the girls walked out of their room. And I saw myself in two look-a-likes. “Girls,” I said. “You look fabulous.”

“We figured we’d let them all know we were with the superstar,” Jelena said. She was wearing a blue glittered top.

“So are you okay with this?” Mel asked. She was wearing a pink one.

“But of course. Copying is the truest form of flattery you know. Or so I hear. So are we all ready to go?”

“Yep,” the others said in unison.

“Well then let’s go,” I said slipping my arms into Nick and Jelena’s arms.

We arrived at the TRL tower and we mingled. I met all kinds of people and had all kinds of people gushing over me. My head was spinning. I was beginning to think that I wasn’t going to be able to perform with my head swirling the way that it was. Finally I just sat down and tried to concentrate. It wasn’t really working, with people constantly coming up to talk to me to ask me this, that, and the other question. A part of me wanted to scream, but another part of me kind of liked it. I’d never had that kind of attention before and it was good. I just hoped that it wouldn’t all go to my head.

Eventually it was time for Nick and me to perform one of our duets. I got on the stage, plastered a smile on my face, and tried to hide my horror. It was all so much. It just seemed like everything was escalating. Performing in front of thousands of people was one thing, and performing in front of a TRL audience was another, but performing for the New Year’s Eve celebration was a whole ‘nother thing all together. I was so afraid of screwing up. But the music began and all the muscles in my body went from tense to completely relaxed and in my element. When the song was over Nick and I went to find my sister and cousin to get ready to ring in the New Year.

We found the girls talking it up with some native New Yorkers having a hell of a time. When we met up with them, we were flooded with autograph requests. We signed as many as we could and then when we there was only ten minutes left before the New Year we stopped. I took my sister and cousin to the window and we waited for the ten-second countdown to begin.

“You did a really good job sister,” Jelena said.

“Thanks,” I replied.

Then the ten-second countdown began and we looked out the window to watch the ball drop. It was the coolest thing I’d ever seen in my whole life. And when the New Year rang in Nick and I embraced in a kiss so long I thought it was never going to end. I knew this was going to be the start of a great year. I mean heck this was the year I was going to get married for Pete’s sake. Everything was finally falling into place for me.

“Happy 2004,” I said.

“You too, love of my life,” Nick replied.

I hugged him and then I grabbed my sister and cousin and hugged them too. I could just feel the new and happy year wash over me already. And I was ready for it.

After two more days in New York, we headed back to Arizona. My sister wanted to make sure she had two days to prepare for school. So, I took her school shopping as soon as we got back. Then Nick finally got to meet my mom for the first time that Saturday night.

“All right Mom, I know it’s been a long time, and I know I should’ve had you meet him before, but this is my fiancé, Nick.”

“Oh it’s nice to finally meet you,” she said extending her hand out to him.

He took it and then kind of pulled her in for a hug. “It’s nice to finally meet you too Ms. Chen.” My mom changed her whole name once she got divorced.

“You can call me Mom if you want. You are going to marry my daughter.”

Nick seemed completely okay with that idea. “Okay Mom.” I had to hold in my laughter.

“Okay well guys, let’s go eat. I’m starving and I’m craving my Thai food.”

“Thai food huh,” Nick said.

“Yes it’s my favorite.”

“Okay, let’s go.”

So we piled into my mom’s van and we headed to one of my Thai restaurants, Thai Cuisine. The dinner was spent with questions being thrown at Nick by my mom, sister, and Mel. The poor guy looked like he was at an interrogation, but at the same time he just had this calm look on his face, like he was totally used to it. But I suppose he had been used to it with all the TV appearances and interviews he’d been to.

After we ate, we returned to my mom’s house and he continued answering questions into the wee night. After a while, we all finally went to bed. My mother went to bed in her own room, my sister and cousin slept in my sister’s room, and Nick and I took another room in my mom’s house.

“I really liked meeting your mom today.”

“Well that’s good Honey. She’s quite taken by you.”

“I’m taken with her too. I can see where you get your charm and your beauty. So now that I’ve met your mom when do I get to meet your dad?”

“Well maybe tomorrow if he’ll answer the phone. He’s got a major gambling problem and half the time on the weekend he won’t even answer his phone. But anyway if it works out maybe we’ll go and pick up my brother from the group home too,” I said kind of in a sad tone.

“Honey, what is it? What’s wrong?”

“Well I just hate the idea of my brother in a group home ya know. He should be here with his family, not in a group home.”

“Well of course I understand how you feel about that. But your family put him there for a reason.”

“Yeah, my dad couldn’t handle him. And how could he? For most of my brother’s life I was the one who took care of him.”

“I know Honey. But think about it. This way he has people who are like him to hang out with.”

“I guess, but still.”

“Well Baby, maybe we can figure something out. Help your mom get him or something.”

“That would be nice. It’s just at the same time he needs so much care. I don’t know. I think once I make enough money to fully support my mom she’ll be able to quit her job and fully take care of him. For now, this will have to do. He seems happy enough anyway. Of course I haven’t seen it for myself. But my mom seems to think that he’s okay over there.”

“See. His happiness is all that matters anyway isn’t it?”

“Yeah. I’ll just have to wait and see for myself tomorrow is all.”

“Good then. Let’s not think about it and go to bed. We have a long day tomorrow. I’ve gotta make rounds,” he said giving me a wink.

I kissed and said, “I love you Lachey.”

“I love you too Beautiful.”

The next morning I gave my dad a call. To my surprise, he actually answered the phone.

“Hello?” I said.

“Hello? Jenny?” My dad said.

“Yeah Dad. Hey are you free for lunch today? I was thinking we could go eat some dim sum. I have someone that I want you to meet. I can go pick up Justin and I’ll bring Jelena and Mel.”

Good Lord it's been over a year huh. Well if anyone's been waiting for a return of NR here it is.

“That’s sound good,” he said.

“Okay then we’ll meet you at the one on Camelback and 19th Ave. Okay?”

“Okay, I’ll see you in two hours.”

“All right.” I hung up the phone “Okay Babe, it’s all set. You’ll be meeting my dad today.”

“Great. I can’t wait. I suppose though it might have been more polite for me to ask him for your hand in marriage than to just show up engaged already right?”

“Maybe, but you know things are as they are.”

“ So very true.”

“So I think I might try something a little dangerous.”

“Oh what’s that?” He asked seductively.

“Oh no, don’t start with me. That’s not what I meant. I meant I was thinking of asking my mom if she’d like to join us for lunch.”

“Ooo, are you sure that’s a good idea Honey?”

“Well no, but I mean I haven’t really seen my mom in a while and I hate to leave her behind. Besides I won’t lie, I’ll tell her we’re having lunch with my father and she can make an informed decision about it. And we can also make sure that they’re not sitting together and they’re gonna have to realize that while us children will always be in their lives they will always have to be in each other’s lives and spend time doing some things together. They’re gonna have to be together at our wedding.”

“So very true. You sure do like to think ahead don’t you?”

“Yes, yes I do.”

“Yet another thing that I love about you,” he said kissing the top of my head.

“All right Honey, I think it’s time we get up and get dressed.”

“I think you’re right,” he said.

“You actually agree with me?”

“Yes because watching you undress is going to be so much fun.”

“Oh goodness, even here in my mother’s house you have to start with all that.”

“You know speaking of which I’m surprised your mother didn’t make me sleep in one of her other rooms.”

“Well my family’s a wee bit more liberal than your family is on that. I’m not exactly sure why. Maybe it’s because they trust us to make the right decisions. Besides I’m a grown woman and we’re already engaged.”

“I guess you have a point there.”

“Now come on,” I said patting his leg and getting out of the bed. I grabbed some clothes and started changing. I felt completely comfortable being naked in his presence. Never in a million years did I think I would feel comfortable being naked in any man’s presence and here I was in front of the hottest man alive just changing my clothes like it was nothing.

“God I just love watching you change. You look so damn good.”

“Oh Nicholas, get dressed Honey.”

“All right, all right,” he said getting up. But instead of actually starting to get dressed he came up to me and wrapped his arms around me. “Just let me get a proper good morning kiss please.”

“Oh all right, but we can’t dilly-dally,” I said looking up at him.

“I won’t,” he said before leaning in for his morning kiss. Oh his lips felt so soft that morning. His tongue started to come out from behind his lips and searched to part my lips, but I knew if I gave in we would be in there for far too long, so I just pushed him away. “Babe,” he whined.

“What? You told me you wouldn’t dilly-dally. Now come on get dressed.” I quickly finished getting dressed and left him in the room alone.

I headed to the kitchen. I was suddenly very parched. In the kitchen, I found the rest of my family already sitting around eating breakfast. “Good morning sleepyhead,” my sister said.

“For your information dear sister of mine, I was not still sleeping this whole time. I called dad and we’re going to lunch with him at dim sum later.”

“Oh we are?” she asked excited. She loved dim sum as much as I did. “Awesome. I haven’t eaten at dim sum in a month.”

“Well good then. I haven’t been there in like forever.” Then I turned to my mom. “So Mom, I know that you and Dad don’t get along too well, but did you want to go to lunch with us? I’m gonna go pick up Justin and this way you can still spend some time with me.”

She thought about it for a bit and then said, “Okay I go.”

“Great. Don’t eat too much guys, you’re gonna wanna leave room for lunch.” After I said that Nick arrived. “It’s about time you got out here.”

“You hid my clothes.”

“I did not you liar. You’re just spoiled when I keep taking them out for you. I swear I don’t know how you go on without me on tour.”

“I don’t either my love,” he said kissing my cheek.

I smiled and asked, “Do you want some water Honey?”

“That would be nice, thank you.” So I poured two cups of water and handed him one. He took it, “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.” Then I drank the whole cup down without stopping. I was extremely thirsty for some reason. “Mm that’s good water,” I said putting the cup down on the table.

“Thirsty much Honey?” Nick asked me.

“Very,” I said giving him a wink.

“You two are so weird,” Mel said.

“You know you like it,” I said to Mel as I stood behind her with my hands on her shoulders.

“Yeah huh,” she said sarcastically.

“Whatever. Eat up guys. I’m gonna call Justin and have them get him ready for us.” I went into the living room and found one of my mom’s cordless phones. I dialed the number to the group home and waited for someone to pick up. “Hello?”

“Hello, who is this?”

“Hi, this is Justin’s sister. Can you please have him ready to go out today?”

“Sure, when will you be by?”

“Soon. And we’ll take care of his afternoon shot today.”

“Okay I’ll let the nurse know.”

“Thank you. Good bye.”

“Bye,” she said before hanging up.

“Well she sounded nice. I guess I’ll just have to see how my brother behaves today Babe.”

“I’m sure he’s fine Honey. If anything were wrong I’m sure your mom would’ve tried getting him out.”

“True, but still. I guess I just have to see for myself.”

“You always do.”

A smile crept onto my face as I said, “Shut up.”

“Make me.”

“Ugh, not now dork. We’ve gotta get going soon.”

“Okay, okay, promise me I’ll get something later.”

“I make no promises. But we’ll see.”

“Good enough for now I guess.”

“Hey Jenny,” my sister said coming in from the kitchen.

“Yes ma’am?”

“When are we leaving?”

“Whenever you guys are ready.”

“Okay Mom just wanted to know.”

“Let her know she’s gonna have to drive too. I don’t have any idea where Justin actually lives remember?”

“Oh yeah. How were you gonna go get him if Mom said no?”

“Ask her for directions and hoped that you knew how to get there too.”

“Oh, okay.” She turned around and headed back to the kitchen.

I shook my head, “That little one has too many questions sometimes.”

“Little one?”

“Yes that’s what I said. She’ll always be my little one.”

“I get that. I feel that way about my sisters too. And as far as questions go, she gets that from you.”

“Oh whatever. You know, I don’t remember if I ever told you this, but I used to think she was my little clone. I honestly believed, well maybe not wholeheartedly, but I used to believe that my parents took my DNA and made another one of me. It’s stupid I know, but science fiction was always interesting to me.”

“It’s not stupid, it just shows what an imagination you have.”

“Oh god Nicholas I swear I can just do no wrong with you.”

“No not really.”

“I guess that’s why I love you so much. You just totally and completely accept me as I am.”

“Of course, I love you more than anything in the world.”

“Blinded by it too if you ask me.”

“No, I don’t think so.”

“Of course you’d say that.” He just smiled brightly at me and leaned in for a kiss.

“Ew, don’t you two know how to do anything else?” Jel asked.

“Good god woman you would think you’d never seen anyone kiss before,” I said looking at her.

“It’s just you guys can’t keep your hands off of each other. Don’t you guys have anything else to do?”

“Yeah I’m waiting for you to get ready dork.”

“Yeah, yeah I’m going. Anything to get away from this,” she said walking away.

“I know these two are always going at it,” Mel said following Jel.

“Jeez, we’re not that bad are we Honey?”

“I don’t think so.”

“I asked the wrong person. Well we should just sit here and watch some TV before my mom catches us and says the same thing.”

“All right, fine.” He put his arm around me and I snuggled into his chest as we sat there watching TV waiting for my family to be done.

A half an hour later and the girls came out announcing they were ready. My mom came out of her room and we all left to go pick up my brother. As soon as he saw me he screamed, “Nini,” and wrapped his arms around me in a tight hug. He always gave the best hugs.

“Hi Justin,” I said. After he hugged me I looked at him and said, “Justin this is my fiancé Nick.”

Justin gave Nick a hug too. “He’s a friendly little guy isn’t he?” Nick said.

“That’s just his way Honey.”

“It’s all good. It’s nice to meet you Justin.”

“Ni...mee…you too,” he said. My brother had a very hard time with language. But we were lucky he was able to say anything at all. As he was growing up we were beginning to wonder if he’d ever speak to us. But eventually he started picking up some words and we were able to understand him a little bit. Now it takes a while to get it, but we get it sooner or later. And I wouldn’t have my brother any other way.

On the way to the restaurant, my dad called me to tell me he was already at the restaurant and he wanted to know how many people we were having for lunch. I told him it would be seven total including him. He said he would get us a table.

When we arrived at the restaurant we went in and were all led to the table my dad was sitting at. My dad got up and reached out for a hug. I went into his arms and returned the hug. Then as if just noticing Nick he said, “Who is this?”

“Well Dad, this is my surprise. This is my fiancé Nick.”

“Fiancé? You engage already? I didn’t even know you were seeing someone.”

“Yeah sorry Dad. If you’d answer your phone every once in a while, you’d have known. Besides, you could’ve asked me you know.”

“Oh Jenny,” he said.

Then the three of us finally sat down. As the food rolled by we picked out each and every dish we wanted, sometimes three or four depending on who wanted some. My sister and I loved their short ribs and so did everyone else. We had a good array of food. My parents even managed to find some sea food dishes too. After all was said and done Nick and I spent $300 for the meal including the tip. I’d never spent so much on any meal before. But it was nice to be able to finally treat my whole family.

After the lunch, I asked my dad if he wanted to join us for a movie. He told me he didn’t have anything better to do so we all tried to decide on a movie. “Let’s actually get to the theater first guys,” I said.

So my brother went with my dad and the rest of us went with my mom and we met up at Metrocenter. We looked at the movie list and tried to choose between Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, Peter Pan, and Haunted Mansion. We eventually all settled on Lord of the Rings.

After the movie, we went into the mall and walked around for a bit. Nick and I got recognized by a few people, but we decided to Scott and Jenn for the day. After the mall it was already time for dinner. So for dinner Nick and I treated my family to the Olive Garden. I love my pasta. Then after that it was time for us to get back to my mom’s. I said goodbye to my dad and we headed back to my brother’s. He seemed to be enjoying himself.

I asked him, “Did you have a good time today Justin?”

“Uh huh,” he said nodding his head vigorously.

“Good. Justin, do you like living at your house?”

“Uh huh. I ha (have) fun,” he said.

“Okay,” I said. “What do you do?”

“I play game wit my friens (friends).”

“Oh yeah? Are they nice to you over there?”

“Yep.”

“Good. You tell me if they’re mean to you okay?”

“Yeah.”

Then after we arrived at his house, we went inside real quick. I wanted to make sure his living arrangements were okay. He had his own room and across from his room, his friend Tuck had a room. There was also one more room and one more kid there, but he wasn’t there at the moment. My brother had fun showing me his room and introducing me to Tuck. He seemed like a nice kid and I was feeling my disappointment over the whole ordeal start to fade. Perhaps my brother living at the group home wasn’t such a bad thing after all.

After we finished with the tour and I was satisfied that he was doing well we all headed back to my Mom’s. My mother was tired and she needed to get to bed so she could work in the morning. So Nick, my sister and I took my cousin back to her house. And then we returned to my mother’s home.

Although my sister had to go to school in the morning we stayed up ‘til midnight talking in her room. Nick let us be, knowing that I needed time alone with her. Once midnight came though, I knew I had to let her sleep, so I retired to my room to be with Nick.

“Finally, I didn’t think you were coming back tonight.”

“Oh, whatever, you know I can’t stay away from you,” I said as I crawled into bed beside him.

“Sure, that’s why you always try and push me out of the bed.”

“Uh, I do not,” I said with a smirk.

“Uh huh,” he said putting his arm around me. “You used to anyway.”

“Yeah, well this is the reason why. You’ve got me totally addicted to being in your arms in the middle of the night. I don’t like it.”

“You know you love me.”

“But of course. I couldn’t put up with you if I didn’t love you.”

He touched the fingers of his free hand on my chin and tilted my head toward him, “I love you Beautiful.” Then he lowered his head and kissed me.

When our lips parted, with my eyes closed still I whispered back, “I love you too Handsome. More than you’ll ever know.”

“I’m pretty sure I have a good idea.”

“No I don’t think you do. Now I think it’s time we went to bed. You’ve gotta meet the rest of my friends this week and I want you well rested.”

“Yes ma’am.” He kissed me and we sunk into the bed. Good night Beautiful. I love you.”

“I love you more.”

“Oh no you don’t. You could never love me more than I love you.”

“Oh, but I do. Especially since you’re the one and only man I’ve ever loved.”

“That doesn’t matter and you know it.”

“Oh whatever, go to bed,” I said right before drifting off to sleep.

For the next few days, I took Nick around town and introduced him to my friends. I spent a lot of time with my sister taking her with us. By Thursday though, Nick and I were finally ready to head back home.

“Jenny, can’t you stay until Sunday?” Jelena asked me.

“I’m sorry sweetie, but I’ve gotta get back and get my stuff together too. Plus, after everything we’ve been through the last few weeks, I think I just need to rest. But don’t worry if I don’t see you in the next couple of weeks I’ll be going to Cali with you for spring break. And you know you can always call me.”

“I know. But you just live so far away.”

“I know I do. Don’t worry though. We have a lifetime to spend time together. I’m only up there for school right now anyway.”

“I don’t know why you’re still going to school now that you’re famous.”

“Because I know better. I know fame can only last so long. I want to make sure that I have something to fall back on.”

“I don’t really think you’re ever going to go broke enough to need it.”

“Fine then I just want the knowledge okay?” I said sticking my tongue out at her.

“Whatever,” she said hugging me. “I’m gonna miss you.”

“I’m gonna miss you too munchkin.”

“Ugh, why do you still call me munchkin?”

“Because you will always be my munchkin.”

“But I’m taller than you.”

“So? You’re still younger than me and that’s all that counts. Would you rather I just call you Baby?”

“You already do that too,” she said sticking her tongue out at me.

“You two are so funny,” Nick said.

“Oh shut it you,” I replied. “You and Drew can be just as bad.”

“No I don’t think so.”

“Yeah I think so. Perhaps not exactly the same conversation, but you two banter just as badly.”

“Well I guess we banter, but I don’t think it’s as bad as this.”

“It is. You’ll just have to take my word for it. Anyway, I gotta get going munchkin. We wanna make sure we get to Flag before dark just in case there might be snow and ice for us to worry about.”

“Okay.”

“Hey Mom. I have to get going,” I shouted. My mother was in her room doing whatever, watching her Asian satellite I figured.

She came out. “Okay, you drive safe okay. I love you,” she said hugging me.

“I love you too.”

Then talking to Nick she said, “You take care of my baby, okay?”

“I will Mom.”

“Aw, how do you just call her ‘Mom’ like that? I can’t do that with your mom.”

“Would you rather I didn’t?” he asked me.

“No, I was just curious.”

“Not that my mom’s not inviting, but your mom just, I dunno, makes it easy.”

“So does yours, I guess maybe it’s my own little complex. I just have one mom ya know.”

“Yeah, my mom will change your mind though.”

“I’m sure in due time it will just come naturally. All right let’s get going Honey.”

My mom and my sister walked us out. “I’ll miss you,” Jelena said.

“I’ll miss you too Honey. I love you,” I said pulling her into a big bear hug. “You be good and just remember I’ll be back for Cali.”

“I’ll try.”

“And don’t hesitate to call me.”

“I know, I know. I can call you any time.”

“Yes, you can. Just because I don’t live here anymore it doesn’t mean that I don’t take care of you anymore.”

“Okay, got it.”

Then I went and gave my mom a hug. “I’ll call you guys when I get there.”

“Okay, I’ll be waiting. I love you.”

“I love you too Mom.”

Then they both gave Nick a hug. “It was nice getting to spend time with you guys,” he said. “I look forward to truly being a part of your family someday soon.”

“As long as you make my sister happy, I look forward to that too,” Jel said.

“I hope I can keep her happy for the rest of her life.”

“I hope so too,” I said.

“Well you make her happy now,” my mom said. “And that makes me happy too.”

“Good. Well we have to be going ladies. I’ll make sure she calls as soon as we get home. Bye.”

“Bye Mom, bye ‘Na,” I said as Nick opened the door for me.

“Bye,” they said in unison.

Nick got in and we headed home. I looked out the window and waved my goodbye. “You survived,” I said.

“Of course I survived. Why wouldn’t I?” he asked.

“Well my crazy family is well crazy, as are my friends. I just wasn’t sure if you’d make it through.”

“Honey, no one was as crazy as you made them sound.”

“Yeah, well we pride ourselves in being crazy so don’t tell me we’re not.”

“Okay Babe, whatever you say.”

Then he just drove while holding my hand as we listened to the radio. Any and every time our duet or my song came on it just tripped me out. I still couldn’t believe that people were listening to my music and I suppose enjoying it.

Once we arrived in Flag I called my mom and sister to let them know that Nick and I had made it home safe and sound. They both sounded relieved and then we said our “I love yous” and hung up the phone. I also called my dad and cousin Mel to let them know we’d made it back okay. After the calls Nick and I just sat on the couch and relaxed for a bit.

“These last few week have been amazing Nicky.”

“I know, I feel the same way.”

“Well really the last few months, since we’ve been together have all been so incredible.”

“I know. And I hate leaving you behind after all these weeks.” He was going to be leaving me again on Monday to head out to some TV appearances he’d scheduled. I obviously couldn’t go with since I had classes. “I wish you could just skip your classes and come with me.” I was about to say something before he continued, “No, it’s okay, don’t say it. I know how important school is to you. I was just saying. I certainly can’t wait for summer to come along again.”

“Yeah, it will be nice to be able to have all that time with you again.”

“Plus you’ll be able to start touring with me.”

“I’m looking forward to that. Each performance so far has been exhilarating.”

“I’m glad you’ve enjoyed yourself.”

“Definitely, I love you so much Nicky,” I said.

“I love you too angel.”

Then we continued to sit in silence on the couch for a while watching TV. I rested my head on his shoulder and felt so comfortable I could fall asleep. In fact I think I did for a bit, because the next thing I knew I was being gently shaken and I heard Nick say, “Beautiful, let’s go to bed.”

“Huh? Oh, I thought I was in bed,” I said getting up.

Then he got up and picked me up as well. “Well you’ll be there shortly,” he said.

I wrapped my arms around his neck and snuggled into his body; he felt so warm. Then he laid me down on my bed and then went to the other side to get into my bed. He wrapped his arm around me and gave me a light squeeze. “I love you Snickers.”

“I love you too Angel.” And we went to sleep.
