Hey ya'll,

This is an older Nick and Jessica fic I wrote a couple years ago. Some of y'all may have already read this, but if it you haven't, that's ok too! I hope y'all enjoy!

Jessica and Nick currently are on hiatus becuase they needed a break from each other. But when Nick is injured in a car accident, it brings them back together. Can they make it through all the hardships of recovery?

“Together Again By Fate”

Chapter 1

Jessica Simpson was lounging in her house in Dallas, Texas. She looked at the TV, which she wasn’t really watching. “Gee, you’d think there’d be something decent on at 10:00 on a Saturday night.” She thought.
“of course, I’m sort of a loser for staying in on a Saturday night, so whatever. Besides, what would I do? Go get drunk and cheat on Nick? Not likely”

Her boyfriend was Nick Lachey of 98 degrees. They’d been dating on and off since January of 2000, which was about two years. At the current moment the, the relationship was off, because they felt they needed time apart. The both of them had pretty successful pop music careers, even though at the moment 98 degrees was on extended hiatus. Jessica herself was enjoying some time off before jumping back into the studio to record her third album.

“Hey Jess, watcha watching?”
Jessica looked at her younger sister, Ashlee. “Nothing, my mind is just wondering, I guess.”
“About Nick?”
Jessica raised her eyebrows. “How’d you know, Ash?”
Ashlee grinned. “I know you Jessica, you love to daydream about him”
“I guess so” Jessica turned off the TV, and yawned. “I think I’m gonna go to bed, night”

Jessica curled up into her nice, warm, bed ready for a full night’s sleep.

About 1:00 am, her cell rang, waking her up. “Who’d be calling me at this hour?” she wondered.

J: h-hello?
C: Jessica? It’s Cate.
(Cate is Nick’s mother)
J: Hi, what brings you to call me at this hour?
C: Jess, can you make the first flight out to Cincinnati?
J: I guess, why?
C: Something’s happened to Nick.
J: Oh god. Is he ok?
C: I really don’t know. John called form the hospital 10 minutes ago and told me.
J: I’ll be right out. Bye.(hangs up)

Jessica quickly packed a suitcase, and put on a white sweatshirt and jeans. She arrived at the airport and caught the 1:55 flight to Cincinnati.

On the plane, she was really worried. What could’ve happened to Nick? “I certainly hope he’s ok” she thought.

She touched down at the airport at 4:05 am eastern time. She reached the hospital, exhausted and confused. She saw Cate and John and rushed to them. “What happened?” she asked.
“Well,” John said “I was asleep and I get this phone call that Nick was in a car accident. A very serious one. Turns out, he was hit by drunk driver and was injured very badly.”
“What kind of injuries?” Jessica asked.
“Broken leg, a slight skull facture, and a broken hand.” John sighed. “He’s in very critical condition at this point in time. We’re not aloud to see him, though”
“Do Drew and the other guys know?”
John shook his head. “Unreachable”

Jessica walked into a waiting room and began to cry. She couldn’t believe this had happened to Nick. She could only hope and pray that he would be ok

Her cell rang then. Jessica quit crying, because she knew it was her mom or dad calling her.
(J-Jessica T-Tina)

J: Hello?
T: Jess, where are you? Why did you leave the house in the middle of the night?
J: I was called out of town mom, Nick’s been in a car accident.
T: Oh no, is he all right?
J: I don’t know. He’s in critical condition at this time, and no one’s aloud to see him.
T: Ok hun, we’ll leave you alone, and call us when you’re coming home, ok?
J: ok.

Jessica sighed. She wanted to see Nick so bad, but she didn’t, because she knew he probably looked horrible.
“Oh well, whatever happens I’m spending the night here” Jessica thought, and managed to drift off for a little bit.

~Chapter 2~

About 5:07 am, the doctor came in and said that someone could see Nick now. Jessica knew it was her turn to go, because she couldn’t resist the urge to go in there.

She walked in to found Nick lying the hospital bed, almost lifeless. Jessica couldn’t believe it. He looked so different from the last time she’d seen him.
She sat down next to the bed and said “Nick, are you there?” she put her hand in his.
“J- Jessica, is that you?”
Jessica nodded. “I’m here Nick, it’s ok.”
Nick slowly opened his eyes. “I didn’t expect you to be here, Jess. What made you come here?”
“Because I want to be with you. Once your mom called, I knew I had to come.”
Nick sighed. “Man, I feel so crappy. I can barely move.”
“Your dad told me that you have a broken hand and leg, and a very slight skull fracture.” Jessica told him.
“Not surprising, that’s were there most pain is” Nick sighed.
Looking at Nick right then, Jessica just knew she had to have them back together. They needed each other, and couldn’t stay apart, especially in these circumstances.
“Nick, I’m thinking we should get back together.” Jessica told him. “What do you think?”
Nick nodded . “Yeah, I think we should. We can’t stay apart, and we need each other. But are you sure you’re willing to put up with me while the injuries heal?”
Jessica smiled. “Yeah, I am sure Nick. Don’t worry about it.” She kissed him on the cheek. “Goodnight”
Nick gave her a kiss back. “Goodnight, Jess.”

Heading back to the hotel to crash, she was thinking about her decision to take care of Nick. She wasn’t sure if she was making the right one. “But Nick needs me” she told herself. “He needs that someone to take care of him, to hold him, and be with him. You’re that person. You’re the only one who can do it”
She knew she would have to move with him, but she didn’t care. She’d like the arrangement.
“Whatever it takes” she thought. “It’s for Nick I’m doing this”

~Next day, back in hospital~

Nick was sleeping and Jessica watched him. He looked so adorable sleeping. Jessica put her hand in his hair.
Nick opened his eyes. “Hey sweetie”
“Hey, how you feeling?”
“Ok” Nick said. “Just tired. I wish I could get out of here.”
“How long did the doctor say you’re supposed to be here?” Jessica asked him.
Nick sighed. “About two weeks or more, I really don’t know”
10 minutes of uncomfortable silence came over them, until Jessica asked, “Nick, do you think we should move in together after you get out of here?”
Nick was in thought for a few minutes until he said “yeah, I think we should buy a house together. Dr. Fitzer said that I can’t live alone, and have someone with me at all times. But you sure you’re ready to commit to me and always be there?”
Jessica nodded “Yes Nick, I’m ready for it. Whatever it takes, I’ll do anything for you”
Nick smiled. “I’m glad I have you on my side.” The two hugged.
“everything’s gonna be fine Nick, I know it” she re[arse]ured him.
“I hope so” they kissed.

~Chapter 3~

~Two weeks later~

Jessica was putting up some finishing touches on the house. She looked around nervously. Today was the day Nick was to come home. She was nervous, because she wasn’t sure how Nick was gonna be like. He seemed ok in the hospital, but Jessica knew that the next few months were gonna be tough ones. She knew she would have to put up with a lot of [crap], but he was worth putting up with.

Just then, her doorbell rang. “ok, here goes nothing” Jessica thought.
At the door were Nick and John.
“Hey Jess, you ready?” John asked.
Jessica nodded, and they lead Nick to the couch.
After Nick was comfortable, John asked Jessica, “Jess, I need to talk to you”
Jessica nodded and followed John to the kitchen.

“So, what is it, John?” Jessica asked.
“First, I want to ask you a question. And think about it; Are you sure you’re ready to commit to Nick and tare of him the way he needs to be taken care of?”
Jessica was in thought for a few minutes. “Yes, I am, John.”
“Ok, I want to make a few things straight with you. 1. Nick won’t exactly be the best person to be around. 2. Don’t be around him 24/7. Give him his privacy when needs it. And 3. Make sure he’s careful when he walks.”
“John, where exactly is he gonna sleep? Will we be in separate rooms, and will I have to help him walk around?” Jessica asked.
John nodded. “Good question. The doctor said he needs to be in his own room and yes, you will have to help him walk around the house, and if you two go out together. But, as he progresses, he may be able to get himself out of bed and things like that.”
“How long do you think it’ll take him to recuperate?”
John shrugged. “Anywhere from 6 to 9 weeks.” He paused. “and Jessica, I want to thank you in advance.”
Jessica was confused. “Thank me? For what?”
“For agreeing to commit to this. We weren’t sure what to do until you suggested that the two of you live together. I think this arrangement will work”
Jessica smiled. “I think it will too I just hope it won’t be too hard.”
“We’ll see” Jessica and John hugged.

After John left, Jessica sat on the couch with Nick. “Jess, do you mind if we have a talk?” Nick asked.
Jessica shook her head. She had a funny feeling that he was gonna say some things similar to what John said.
“I expect some things out of this. I don’t exactly want you to be overly protective and checking on me every 5 minutes. And, I don’t want help on everything as I get better. I expect to do some things myself. You think you can do that?”
“Yep” Jessica said. “And if there’s any time you need privacy, just ask. I’ll leave the room.”
Nick smiled. “Good. And I would like some time alone right now.”
Jessica got up to leave. “All right, Nick. If you need anything, just call for me.”
Nick nodded. “I will, Jess.”

Jessica plopped on the bed in the room she’d chosen as her room. Looking around her surroundings, she knew that things were gonna be really hard over the next few months. But, as far as she was concerned, it would be worth it. At least, she hoped it would be.
“Whatever the cost, I’m putting up with this.” She thought.

~Chapter 4~

~The next morning~

Jessica could hear birds singing outside her bedroom window as she woke up the next morning. “Yea, a new day” she thought. “My first full day living with Nick”
She sat up, stretched, and yawned. “Hopefully, this’ll be successful”
She walked down to the kitchen and started to make some coffee.
5 minutes later, she heard unsteady footsteps and she walked towards the sound.
Nick was trying to walk, and looked like he was about to slip. Jessica caught his right arm and helped him to the table.
“How’d you sleep last night, Nick?” she asked.
Nick shrugged. “all right, I guess. It was a little hard to get settled because I was so used to sleeping in a hospital bed, but I got a decent amount of sleep.” He looked around. “This feels weird, though”
“What do you mean, weird?” Jessica asked him.
“It’s just feels funny to up and walking around, I can’t really explain it.” Nick sighed. “I still have flashbacks of that night… it still haunts me”
“What exactly happened?” Jessica asked him curiously.
Nick sighed. “Well, I was driving along at a decent speed, and everything seemed ok. Then, I see these lights coming at me at about 90 mph, and everything completely went black then, I found myself in the hospital.”
“Do you think the other driver was drunk?”
Nick nodded. “The [arse]hole had to be, to driving at the speed that he was” Nick paused, looking down at his coffee cup. “But, there’s something else that really pissing me off”
“And what’s that?”
“Drew, Jeff and Justin haven’t made any efforts to make any contact in the past two weeks, it’s almost like they don’t care or something. But, I really don’t mind that it’s Justin and Jeff, but Drew… that’s different story”
“Didn’t you and Drew recently get into some big fight or something, because I was talking to Jeff recently and that’s what he said”
Nick got a sour look on his face. “Yeah, we did. But that was about two or three months ago, and I thought he was over that, apparently not.”

The day progressed on, with nothing really exciting happening. Nick didn’t have the energy to do much of anything, so he slept a lot. “Hopefully we’ll be able to go out together once Nick gets some energy back.”

It was later in the night, and Nick and Jessica were cuddling on the couch, watching TV together. “You know something, Jess?” Nick asked.
She looked at him. “What, Nick?”
“I was extremely surprised that you came so quickly to see me, because you made it cleat when we called off our relationship, that you never wanted to make any contact with me whatsoever.”
Jessica nodded. “I didn’t, because I needed room to grow and be by myself for awhile. But, once your mom called, I just knew I had to come, I really don’t know, it was some kind of gut feeling, I guess. Hopefully, our love for each other will survive this tough time.”
Nick smiled “I certainly hope so too, because I don’t know what I’d do without you, Jess, I love you so much”
Then, the couple leaned in and kissed an affectionate and p[arse]ionate kiss.

As Jessica went to bed that night, she was happy. “Well, the first day went smoothly” she thought. “But nonetheless, there’s a million days left and things could change by then.”
She looked out her window at the starry night sky. “Hopefully, everything will work out for the best.”
The, she drifted off into a peaceful sleep.

~Chapter 5~

~Two weeks later~

Things had gone by pretty smoothly over the last two weeks. They always gave each other space and got along great.

At the moment, Ashlee, Tina, Joe, Cate, John, and Nick’s stepsister Josie were at the house for a little family gathering.
“so, are things going well here?” Tina asked.
Jessica nodded. “I guess. We haven’t been fighting or anything recently, so I guess that’s good.”
“You sure?” Ashlee teased. “Nothing… dirty hasn’t been going on?”
Jessica’s mouth dropped open. “ASHLEE SIMPSON! You know better than to tease me about that!”
Jessica definitely didn’t like it when her sister or anybody for that matter, teased her about her vow to keep her virginity till her wedding night. It was a vow she intended to keep it as long as she had to, whenever her future husband came along in her life”
Jessica looked at Cate and John. “Sorry about that I just hate it when Ashlee teases me about that type of thing”
“Don’t worry about it” John said. “You should be able to stand up for what you believe in.”
“But that doesn’t mean I still don’t do it” Ashlee had a mysterious grin on her face.
Everyone laughed, except Jessica, who rolled her brown eyes. “OK, next topic, everyone”
“Does Jessi tend to overprotect you, Nick?” Josie asked.
“Yeah she’s my little maid” Nick said.
Jessica slapped her boyfriend. “Nick! I am not!”
Nick smiled a sweet smile. “I know, babe, I’m just teasing you” He kissed her cheek.
Despite that, Jessica was annoyed. “all right, whatever. You always have to tease the dumb blonde”
“Cheer up Jess, you’re not the only blonde in the room” Joe told her.
Joe was right. Tina and Ashlee were also blonde-haired, which was good.
“And besides, you’re not dumb, either.” Cate added.
“I know” Jessica looked at her hands. “It’s just that you people make me feel dumb sometimes when you guys tease me, even though it’s all in good fun”
Nick put his arm around Jessica and she put her head on his chest .
“Aww.. don’t they look so cute” Ashlee said.
Jessica decided not to shoot back at her sister, she‘d had enough of that.

The rest of the conversation was kinda light, then Josie suggested they all go out to eat somewhere. Everyone agreed to it, and Jessica looked at Nick. “You think you’re up to going out?” Jessica asked him.
Nick shrugged. “Yea, I’ll just need you to help me balance myself while I walk.” He paused. “Besides, I need to get out of our house, we’ve been cooped up in here for too long”
Jessica had to agree to that. They had barely left the house except for errands and boring stuff like that.

Dinner was fun. The conversation between everyone was great and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Jessica almost forgot about Nick’s injuries during that time, and Nick really didn’t seem to notice them either.

After being completely stuffed with a wonderful dinner, they decided to go bowling. Jessica was a little surprised, because she had only been bowling two or three times in her life. “I’m gonna stink up the place” Jessica said as they came down to the lanes.
“Don’t worry, babe, just do the best you can.” Nick smiled at his girlfriend.

Everyone played for themselves while Nick just sat and watched. Jessica felt bad that Nick couldn’t get in on the fun, but Nick insisted he didn’t mind sitting out and watching everyone else.
One particular time was really amusing . It was Jessica’s turn, and she was walking up to her lane. She was studying the pins and she swung her arm back to throw the ball. Suddenly, Jessica felt her legs go out form under her and she fell on her butt with the ball rolling down. Everyone laughed, including Jessica. After she’d gotten up, she noticed that she’d gotten a strike. (For those of y’all that don’t know much about bowling, a strike is when you get all 10 pins knocked down)
Jessica put her arms in the air and said “Score! Am I good or what?”
“No, it’s sheer dumb luck” Ashlee teased.
Jessica rolled her eyes. “whatever Ash, you didn’t fall on your butt while getting any of your points”
That caused everyone to laugh really hard.
Ashlee nodded. “True.. very true”
The game went on.

At the end, it turned out to be Jessica who’d outscored everyone. She’d won 3 games and gotten 9 strikes in all of the games. Jessica had to admit she was proud of herself.
“now if only I can get my sister to shut up.” She thought as she listened to Ashlee ramble on about some guy she knew.

That night, Jessica was ready to crash in her comfy bed. That night had been fun and she was extremely tried. She decided to go say good night to Nick first.
As she slowly entered Nick’s room to discover he was already asleep, she decided to just not wake him and give him a goodnight kiss. She sneaked over to Nick’s bed and looked at him for a minute. He looked like such an angel sleeping there. In Jessica’s eyes, he was perfect.
He kissed him on the cheek and crept out of the room, shutting the door behind her.

~Chapter 6~

The next morning, Jessica got and stretched, still tired, even though she had gotten a good amount of sleep the night before.
She walked over to her window to notice the sun out with a few clouds. “Hopefully, today will just as positive and upbeat as the weather” Jessica thought to herself, smiling.

After a nice shower, and she had gotten dressed, Jessica walked to the kitchen, whistling, when she noticed Nick sitting in the kitchen, drinking his morning coffee.
“morning, Nick” she said cheerfully.
Nick looked at her. “Hey Jess.”
“You don’t sound good Nick, you ok?”
Nick nodded. “Yes, I’m fine”. His tone was weird, considering the way he usually talked.
It was the tone he was when he was angry , but it wasn’t a normal tone, either.
“You sure, because I’m-“
“Yes, I’m sure” That was signal that Nick wanted to left alone.
Jessica held up her hands. “Ok, ok, I’ll leave you alone”

As she walked back to the den with her coffee, Jessica became worried. Nick had never acted like that to her before, and she didn’t like it. And she had this funny feeling that there was more to come of it, and maybe some more worse things. “Hopefully, it’s nothing” Jessica thought as she settled in to watch some TV.

~That afternoon~

Jessica went out with her best friends Sara and Jenn, and Sara’s boyfriend, Brent to get away form the tense atmosphere of the house. When she’d told Nick she was going out, he didn’t seem too interested, just merely told her to have fun. Jessica almost knew there was something going with him but she didn’t ask him because she was afraid he would get mad at her.

“So, how’s this business with taking care of Nick going?” Sara asked her.

Jessica shrugged. “Ok, I guess. Today, he’s started getting al little more… I dunno.. tense with me. I mean, he hasn’t kissed me or anything today and by now, he usually would have”

“Well” Brent said “ You gotta give him a break. He going through a tough time and he needs his space. I mean, I feel sorry for him. He’s trying to cope and he sometimes probably doesn’t want to be bothered. I’m not saying that he doesn’t want to have you by his side or anything, but he needs to have some privacy, you know?”
Jessica nodded. “I know he does, but I can’t help but worry about him, you know?”
Jenn nodded. “We see, but there’s a fine line between being worried and being overprotective and it never shall be crossed.” She paused. “You shouldn’t ignore him or anything, but still.”
Jessica sighed. “Ok, you guys are right I’ll tone it down a little”

The foursome then went to the mall to shop. They got a lot of neat stuff and laughed and talked a lot. Jessica had to admit it was a relief, but she wanted to see how Nick was doing.

She got back to the house, dropped her new stuff in her room and looked through the house for Nick. “Nick,” she called “ Nick , where are you?”
“Down here, Jess.” Came a voice from downstairs.
Jessica ran downstairs to notice Nick on the computer. (His left hand was broken and he’s right handed, so he could be on the computer)
Jessica sat down next to him and asked “Nick, you aren’t mad at me, are you?”
Nick shook his head. “No, why would I be?”
“I really don’t know, but your tone you showed to me this morning kinda scared me.” Jessica looked down at her hands.
Nick turned in his seat. “It’s nothing, Jessica. I’m not mad at you and have no reason to be.” He kissed Jessica’s forehead.
That made Jessica feel a little better, but she still had this funny feeling that things would get worse form here on out.

Jessica watched Nick browse the internet a little bit, then they decided to go upstairs and watch some TV.
As they cuddled up with each other, Jessica was convinced, at least for now, things were gonna be ok.

But at about 1:00am, Jessica walked by Nick’s room and she could hear him talking on the phone and she didn’t like what she heard.

Chapter 7~

Jessica leaned closer to the door, and she could hear Nick say “Mom, I need to tell you something”
There was a pause and Nick said “Well, it’s kinda weird, but I’m getting really sick and tired of being dependent on other people. I want to be independent and live on my own.
Cate then said something and Nick said “Well, yeah true, but I’m sick of having to be so handicapped and to have to depend on everyone else to get me around.”
Cate asked him something and Nick told her “Yes, I do appreciate Jessica and all she does for me, but still… I want to be on my own.”
Jessica couldn’t listen to him anymore. How dare he say that? All she’d done for him and this was what she got? “Remind me never to do anything for him again” She thought as she went back to her room.

She flopped down on her bed, angry and upset, but she did not cry. “I can’t believe this” She thought. “I am never talking to Nick ever again”
Then she fell asleep, trying to forget everything.

~The next morning~

Jessica came down to the kitchen, in the grumpiest mood possible and she noticed Nick was already eating his breakfast. She avoided his eyes as she poured herself a cup of coffee.
But Nick seemed to know why she wasn’t talking to him. “You heard what I said, didn’t you?”
Jessica turned around “How’d you know that?”
“I have my ways” Nick said a mysterious voice.
“But still” Jessica said “I didn’t like what you said last night. It makes me feel under appreciated, like you don’t appreciate me and what I’ve done for you”
“Jess, baby, I do. I never even expected you would agree to take care of me and move in this house with me. I didn’t even think you would care enough to come the hospital that night I got in the crash. I never expected any of that”
“But then why do you still treat me like crap?” Jessica asked him.
“You mean, what I did yesterday morning? That was nothing. Couldn’t you tell I wanted to be left alone?”
“I just didn’t like the way you looked. I just had to see if you wee ok”
“Well, I was” Nick said, annoyance starting to show in his voice.
“Are you trying to say that I’m too nosy?” Jessica asked him.
“Maybe” Nick said “Maybe not”
“You are such a jerk” Jessica muttered.
“Same goes to you” Nick said.
“You think you’re so tough? I got better comeback than that” Jessica had her hands on her hips by then.
“Let’s hear it”
“You’re nothing but a stuck up boy band freak”
“Oh yeah? And then you’re just a short, dumb blonde”
“I may be short but I’m not dumb” Jessica crossed her arms across her chest.
“Nice little comeback thee” Nick said a very sarcastic tone.
“[freak'n] you, Nicholas Lachey. You just get out of my face!” Jessica hurried out of the room.
“FINE!” Nick yelled at her back. “I’ll be too glad to.”

Jessica got into her room, and slammed the door, though she was in disbelief. Had she and Nick really had their first big fight? Regardless, Jessica was mad at Nick and she needed to get away from this house. “Maybe soon I’ll go back to Texas” she thought as she climbed into her bed, pulled the covers over her head and wanted to get out of this place.

~Chapter 8~

The next day at about 5:45, Jessica got up and packed up her stuff. “I’ll be so glad to get of out this place.” She thought. “I can’t stand being around Nick and I don’t want to our fights to get worse.”
After the fight they had that morning, Nick and Jess got into another flight that afternoon and Jessica’s decision to go to Texas had been justified. She had to get away form him and all the drama that was surrounding them at the moment. She had no idea if she would return, but she really didn’t care about that at the moment.

But first, Jessica had to call Cate, and she hated to wake her at this hour, but she needed to ask her if she would stay with Nick and watch over him.

“Hello?” Cate’s voice was really sleepy.

“Hey Cate, it’s Jessica. I hate to wake you up but I need to ask you something.”

“Ok, what it is it?”

“I need you to stay with Nick, because I’m leaving this house. But I don’t want him to be by himself, even though he wants to be.”

Cate paused. “I suppose myself and John can do that. I heard about the fight and I don’t blame you for wanting to go out of the house for awhile. When are you gonna be back?”

Jessica sighed. “I don’t know and I really don’t care right now. I just want to go back to Texas.”

“Ok, I understand. Talk to you soon, ok?”

“Bye Cate”

Jessica hung up and brought her stuff downstairs. She snuck herself something to eat, and loaded her stuff in the car. She considered leaving a note for Nick, but decided not to. “He probably won’t give a [freak'n] anyway” Jessica thought bitterly. “And I don’t either.”
She pulled out of the driveway and headed for the airport.

~On the plane~

Jessica looked out the window, thinking of all that had happened recently. “At least I can get my mind off this” She thought, sighing. “Nick’s been giving me too much crap recently.”
She looked down at the scenery below. “My gosh, everything looks so small” she thought. “I wish my problems were like that”
An in-flight movie came on, so Jessica decided to watch that. Afterwards, she took a nap till the plane landed.

~At DFW Airport~

Jessica walked into the airport, noticing lots of people walking around. “Thank god no one realizes who I am” Jessica said to herself. “because I’m in no mood to deal with the [freak'n]ing paparazzi.”
She got her bags and rented herself a car. When she was loaded and ready to go, she decided to just head to her parents house. “Maybe I’ll stop at some of my old hangouts while I’m here” She thought.

Jessica smiled as she approached her parents house. It looked so homey and comfortable, and right now, that’s exactly what Jessica wanted. “I’m so glad to see this” Jessica thought as she pulled up to the driveway.
She walked up the front door and knocked. Tina answered, a look of huge surprise on her face. “hi Jess!”
“Hey Mama” They hugged.
“What are you doing here?”
“Well Mama” Jessica said “it’s a long story, and I’ll tell you when I get my stuff in my room”
They walked into the living room and Jessica hugged her dad, Joe. “You want me to get your stuff out of the car?” Joe asked Jessica.
“Yes, that would be great Daddy”

After Jessica’s stuff was settled in her old room and everyone had gotten themselves a drink or something, they went into the living room and Joe asked her. “So Jess, what made you decide to come here out of the blue?”
“Well, Nick and I got into a major fight.”
Tina raised her eyebrows. “Really? What happened?”
So Jessica told them what she overheard, and what else triggered the fight. She didn’t tell them any of the exact words they said, but she did give them a good description of what happened.
“So, I’m going to stay here for awhile” Jessica finished.
“You sure you didn’t jump too soon? This sounds like you guys were smoothly for awhile” Joe said.
Jessica nodded. “We were, but after the morning fight, we had another one in the evening and I knew I had to leave. The atmosphere was WAY too tense.”
“So you don’t miss Nick?”
“You kidding me? I hate him right now!” Jessica sighed. “I just want get away”
Changing the subject, Jessica asked “So, where’s Ashlee today?”
“had to do an acting interview in L.A. today. She’ll be back tomorrow.” Joe said.
“I wonder what for?”
“I’m sure she’ll tell you all about it when she gets here” Tina said with a smile. “Who wants dinner?”
Both Joe and Jessica said yes and Jessica helped Tina make it. They ate together and had an enjoyable night.
As Jessica crawled into her bed she thought, “This is perfect. I love life in Texas”

~Chapter 9~

~At lunch with Ashlee~

“So, how did your acting interview go?” Jessica was asking her sister.
“Great” Ashlee said, with the biggest grin on her face. “They said I could have a part, and it’s a pretty big one”
“Like what?”
“Well” Ashlee began “I get to play one of the boys love interest, Roxie. She’s kinda mean, but she can be nice.”
“Sounds like you” Jessica said teasingly.
“Hey, I’m not that mean!” Ashlee protested.
“You can be” Jessica paused. “But I’m just teasing ya, sis”
Ashlee nodded and told Jessica a little more about her new acting gig.

Then, Ashlee asked, “So, tell me, why did you come home?”
Jessica sighed and told her about the fight she had with Nick and why she was feeling so overwhelmed.
“I don’t blame you for leaving. And you’re probably not gonna go back to him, are you?”
Jessica rolled her eyes. “For the umpteenth time, I don’t know and I don’t care. Now, I don’t another thing said about it while I’m here, all right?”
Ashlee nodded. “Ok, ok Miss Temper.” She was grinning, though.
“Good” Jessica paused. “So…did you see some hot-looking guys in L.A.?”
Ashlee grinned. “oh yeah! There were some hella fine guys! “
The two girls laughed and proceeded to talk more.

I hope I portrayed that right. I was nervous about writing this scene)

After lunch, Jessica and Ashlee headed off to the mall to me some of their friends. Hannah, Brie, Diana, and Jessi were waiting for them.
“ready to hit the shops?” Hannah asked them as they came to the group.
“Oh yeah, definitely” Ashlee said and they started.

The five hours that they spent in that mall was the most fun Jessica had had in the longest time. She really didn’t buy anything, but it was fun to watch Ashlee and her friends model the clothes they tried on and model them for each other. So of the outfits were good, but some were just downright awful. As Jessi told Brie in a pair of dark brown pants and shirt “You looked like you dyed that in mud”
They laughed at that, and Brie actually agreed.

Back at the house, Ashlee, Jessica, Joe and Tina, were sitting around the kitchen table, eating dinner.
“Wow” Tina commented. “This is the first time we’ve actually had four of us together for dinner in a long time”
“I know” Ashlee said “We’ve had such busy schedules, we’ve just not really had time”
Joe was sitting there, a really thoughtful look on his face and he looked like he was really thinking about something.
“What you thinking about, Daddy?” Jessica asked him.
“Well” Joe said “I was thinking we could take a family trip to the mountains of North Carolina. It’s a beautiful place and there’s plenty to do there. It’s a perfect escape from the stresses of everyday life, which I think all of us could use right now.”
Ashlee looked skeptical, but Joe said “don’t worry, Ashlee, we’ll get as nice house with all the essentials”
“When do you wants to do this, Joe?”
“In a couple weeks, it’ll be really nice then. You in, Tina?”
“Sounds great” Tina said “I’ll go” ‘
Joe turned to Jessica “How about you, Jess?”
”Definitely, daddy”
Joe looked at Ashlee, who just nodded.
“So, what exactly is there?” Tina asked him.
Joe got up and returned a few minutes later with some pamphlets and brochures. “There’s lots that you’d like Tina, like this” He pointed out some things.
Jessica looked at one of the pamphlets. The mountains were absolutely beautiful. “I can’t wait to go there” She thought, smiling to herself.

~Two weeks later~

That time was really enjoyable. Jessica had fun with family, and she was free of any pain or stress. She could just be herself and not have to worry about it.

But, when she was packing to go the North Carolina mountains, she got an interesting phone call.

“Hello?”

“Hi Jess, it’s Cate”

Jessica was surprised, but glad to hear Cate’s voice. “Hey Cate, how are ya?”

“Just great. How’s life in The Lone Star state?”

Jessica sighed. “It’s been great. I’ve been hanging out with my family and friends. I’ve been free of pain and drama. It feels great”

“I’m so glad to hear that, because you really deserve it.”

Jessica felt herself blush. “Thanks, Cate, I appreciate it. So, how are you and John?”

“We’re doing ok. The both of us are a little stressed about switching between living with Nick, but it’s going smoothly.”

Jessica flinched at the thought of Nick. “Has he talked about me any, like said anything bad about me or anything?”

“Not really. He rarely mentions you. I have no knowledge of what his feelings towards you are at this point.” Cate said.

Jessica didn’t know what to say. She knew she shouldn’t care about Nick, but she couldn’t help but feel disappointed that Cate hadn’t said that Nick had said anything about her. “Ok, I was just wondering. I’m really kinda surprised though. From that he said to me, I thought he’d be saying mean things about me every day”

“Nah. Even if Nick was mad you, do you think he’d say bad things about you?” Cate asked.

That made Jessica think for a minute. She didn’t really know, because she and Nick had never really had a fight before the one in the house. “I dunno, Cate, because we’ve never really had a fight before.”

“Oh well, its no big deal.” Cate paused. “I’m gonna go start lunch. Take care, ok?”

“Ok, bye Cate”

Jessica hung up and finished her packing. “There. Now I’m gonna go eat something and we’ll go to the airport”

~Over Ashville~

Jessica looked out her window in the plane. “These mountains are so beautiful” she thought. “I can’t wait to explore this area.”
Jessica looked over to Tina. “You think this trip will be fun?” She asked Tina.
Tina nodded. “I think so. These mountains are so beautiful, and the area looks so peaceful. And it gives us a break from the hot weather of Texas.”
Jessica had to admit Tina was right. As much as she loved Texas’s hot weather, she thought would be nice to have some cooler weather.
“Is the house nice?”
Tina nodded. “yes. It’s on a lake, and what I’ve heard, the lakefront is extremely pretty.”
Jessica smiled. “Glad to hear it. I can’t wait to get there”
She then sat back in her seat, waiting for the plane.

~In Cashiers~

After Joe had signed the rental papers and gotten the house keys, they headed out to the house. The mountain roads were windy, enough to give you a headache, but Jessica wasn’t complaining. She looked at scenery, amazed. “This region is so pretty.” She thought. “I know we’ll have so much fun here.”

The house was pretty, sitting on the lakeside. It consisted of two stories, two balconies, a nice kitchen, a living room, family room, 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. It also had a ping-pong table. “I’ll definitely be beating Ashlee at this” Jessica thought with a grin.

Jessica walked out the table deck and looked out onto the lake. The color was a pretty blue-green and surrounded by the blooming spring trees. “I love this place” Jessica thought. “And this trip has only just begun”

~Chapter 10~

After dinner that night, Jessica walked on the porch, amazed. “This looks so peaceful” Jessica thought.
The lake was quietly swaying in the night, the moonlight shining on it. “I wish Nick were here”
That thought really surprised her. Why would she be thinking about him? She was mad at him and didn’t want to go back to him. “He and I are so over with.” Jessica said aloud.
“Who are you trying to convince, Jess?” Her conscience seemed to say. “Your head or your heart?”
Jessica shook head. “Whatever, I’m not listening to this” she walked back to the house, trying to get Nick out of her head.

The next day, Jessica woke up and began to fix the coffee for everyone. She looked outside the kitchen window. The sun was rising, leaving the whole lakeshore with a fresh glow, and she also heard the songbirds sing.
Jessica began to whistle along with the birds. They went back and forth till Joe came out of his bedroom that he was sharing with Tina.
“You look cheerful this morning, Jess.” Joe commented. “Any particular reason?”
Jessica shook her head. “Nope, I’m just in a good mood.” She paused. “Would you like some coffee, Daddy?”
Joe nodded. “Very much so, thanks.”
Jessica fixed his coffee and sat down at the table. “So, Daddy, what do you want to do today?”
Joe thought a minute. “Probably go see a waterfall. It’s called Dry Falls and the neat thing about this waterfall is you can actually walk under the waterfall. And don’t worry, it’s not much of a hike.” He added.
“Sounds really neat.” Jessica said. “Anything else?”
“Maybe look at the local towns a little, I really don’t know right now.” Joe looked out the window. “This place sure is beautiful”

After everyone had gotten up and gotten ready, they packed up in the van sand began to drive. Soon, they got to Dry Falls.
After a little hike, they saw it. “This is so neat” Jessica thought.
The waterfall was pretty, with the water slowly trickling down the cliff and it was so thin you could walk under it.
Jessica pulled out her camera and took a picture.

After spending a little time there, they went back to the van and did a little more sightseeing. Jessica just stared out the window and watched it all go by. “This scenery is so peaceful” Jessica thought. “It’s like you can just go here and not have to worry about anything.”
“And there’s a lot I did have to worry about”
“What are you talking about?” Jessica asked herself. “You’re not there, and so you shouldn’t have worry about all that’s going on there. Besides, isn’t Nick supposed to hate you?”
Jessica shook her head, trying to keep those thoughts out. “I don’t need to battling this” she thought.
“What’s the matter, Jess?” Tina asked her. “You look a little depressed.”
“Nothing, Mama, I’m just thinking.” She sighed. “And why should Nick haunt my thoughts anyway, we’re supposed to be hating each other.”

In a little town called Brevard, they stopped and explored. Jessica and Tina had a ball looking at the antique shops and all the little things like that. Joe and Ashlee had fun looking at everything.
After walking around for about 1 ½ hours, they stopped at this ice cream shop. Jessica got herself a vanilla milkshake, Ashlee got a chocolate milkshake, and Joe and Tina got cones.
Jessica took a sip of her milkshake and said “Mmm... nothing like a good old-fashioned milkshake to cool you down after a long day of sightseeing.”
“I’ll agree to that” Tina said. “This day has been fun.” Tina paused. “Do you like it here, Jess?”
Jessica nodded. “I love it here. It’s helped me get my mind off the every day stresses of life.”
“Ooo…” Ashlee teased. “Is Nick included?”
“Shut up” Jessica said “You know I don’t want to think or talk about him.”
“Aren’t you supposed to go back to recording soon?” Joe asked Jessica.
Jessica nodded. “Soon. I have some ideas of what I want this time around, but I still need to develop some.”
“Maybe this place will give you some inspiration” Tina suggested.
Jessica nodded. “Maybe so, maybe so”

They went back to the house and Jessica went into her room and took a nap, since she was so exhausted form all the excitement of the day.

After sleeping for about 2 hours, Jessica’s cell phone rang. “Jeez Louise, who’d be calling me now?” Jessica asked herself.
She picked up and answered. “Hello?”

“Hey Jess, it’s Drew.”

This shocked Jessica out of her wits. Why was Drew calling her, because the last she knew, Nick and Drew weren’t speaking. “Hey Drew, what’s up?”

“Nothing really, just wanted to ask you something.”

Jessica got curious “Ok, what is it?”

“Well, I was wondering if Nick would still be mad at me, because I wanna call him up and talk to him, but I’m too scared.” Drew explained.

“Well, Drew, the last time he told me, he said that you guys got in a fight and he wasn’t sure if you were over that.”

“And when was that?” Drew asked.

Jessica thought for a minute. “I don’t remember, it was a little while ago.” She paused. “But I’m sure you’re not aware that Nick and I got into a fight?”

“No. When was that?” Drew asked her.

“About two and half weeks ago. Nick and I just got really pissed off at each other. I rather not relive the details for you.”

“That doesn’t sound like you two, cause I’ve never seen or heard of you two getting in a fight.” Drew said.

“That’s what I thought at first. I was in disbelief. But I left him, anyway.”

“You think you’ll go back?”

Jessica shrugged. “I dunno, Drew. Recently, I’ve been thinking about Nick and how much I miss him, but I’ve been scolding myself doing so, because we’re supposed to be hating each other. And I don’t know what he’s feeling right now, so why should I?”

“Well, Jess, you need to do what your heart says. If it says go back to him, do it. If it doesn’t, don’t bother. It’s about what you want to do.”

“But, the problem is, I dunno what I want. It’s so confusing.” Jessica sighed.

“Don’t worry” Drew re[arse]ured her. “Something will come along that’ll tell you what do to about this.”

Jessica nodded. “Thanks, Drew, I really needed that re[arse]urance.”

She could imagine Drew smiling. “It’s no prob lil sis.”

“And, if you call Nick, don’t tell him you talked to me, all right?”

“I won’t Jess. Talk to ya later.”

“Bye”

Jessica hung up feeling a little bit better. She had a little more guidance on what to do, and she was in a better mood.

After a wonderful dinner of Joe’s specialty chili, and doing some other stuff, Jessica took a shower and went to bed. “I’m really loving this trip” She thought as she hit the pillow.

~A few days later~

The trip had been wonderful. It taught Jessica to appreciate what you have and the beauty of life itself.
She was sitting on the boat dock, looking over the moonlit lake. “Nick would love this view.” Jessica thought sadly.
The last few days, Jessica had been thinking about Nick a lot and found it useless to push the thoughts away.
“Does this really mean I should go back to him?” Jessica asked herself. “I’m thinking about him so much, why shouldn’t I?”
“But does he miss me?” She thought.
She looked up at the moonlight sky. “What am I to do?” she wondered aloud.

Then she knew. Her sixth sense kicked in. Jessica knew she had to go back to Nick. They were meant to be together, hadn’t she proved that when she came back take care of him?
She smiled to herself. “I’m so ready to go back”
Standing up, Jessica walked up to the house, feeling the happiest she had in weeks.

~Chapter 11~

The next day, Jessica got up excitedly and finished packing up her stuff. After that, she called the airline to see if there were any flights from Asheville to Cincinnati in the next few days. The woman said they had a flight at 2:10, an hour and 20 minutes till Joe, Tina and Ashlee went back to Dallas. Jessica purchased a ticket, figuring she would catch up on sleep in the plane.
Jessica came out of the bedroom, seeing Tina sitting at the kitchen table.
“Morning, Mama.”
Tina looked up at her. “Hey. You look like you want to go somewhere other than Dallas.”
“Yep, I’m going back to Cincinnati.”
Tina raised her eyebrows. “Why?”
“Well, I feel that I need to go back to Nick. I need to be with him and to be honest with you, I miss him.”
Tina smiled. “I knew you would decide to do that eventually. You and Nick belong together.”

~At the airport~

Jessica had just given everyone a hug good-bye and Tina asked her “Now, Jess, you sure you want to do this?”
Jessica nodded. “Yes, mama, I’m totally sure. I’m having this gut feeling that this’ll be all ok. I promise to call.” She hugged Tina again.
“Ok, I’m just nervous. Be safe, and call me sometime tonight, ok?”
Jessica nodded. “All right.”

As she looked out the window of the plane she became excited and nervous. “Oh gosh, I hope Nick will take me back” she thought.
She then fell asleep, feeling a little nervous, but calm.

~In Cincinnati~

Jessica woke to the flight attendant announcing that they were now in Cincinnati and they could now get off the plane. “Wow, I really slept late” Jessica thought, as she got up, gathered her stuff, and got off.

As Jessica walked to the airport exit, she tried to remember where she’d parked her car a few weeks before.
“Oh yeah, in one of those long holds parking garages.”
Luckily, the walk to parking garage wasn’t too long and Jessica got all of her stuff in the car. “Ok, hopefully in a matter of minutes, I’ll be in Nick’s arms again, and we’ll be a happy couple again.”

Jessica nervously pulled into the driveway and walked up the door. She put her key in the lock, unlocked the door, and stepped in the door.
Jessica stepped into the living room, seeing Nick on the couch. Nick looked at her, the widest smile coming on his face. “Jess! I never thought you’d come back”
“Nick” Jessica walked over the couch and sat down beside him. “I thought you’d still be mad at me.”
“Nah” Nick said “I got over it after awhile.”
Jessica looked down at his hand. It was out of the cast. “Your hand! It’s healed!”
Nick smiled. “I know, it healed quicker than it was supposed to. My skull fracture is healed, but my leg… that’s another story.”
Jessica became concerned. “Why?”
“Well, it’s not healing like it’s supposed to, and I’m doing some intense physical therapy. I’ve been doing it for a few weeks, and it’s too freaking painful.”
“Don’t worry, Nick. I’ll go with you the next time you have it.”
They leaned in and began to kiss. Jessica was smiling inwardly at how wonderful it was to be with Nick “I belong here” She thought. “This where I’m supposed to be.”

Then, Nick and Jessica curled up on the couch and watched their favorite movie.

~The next morning~

Jessica practically jumped out of bed. She was back with the love of her life, and she was about to go back in the studio and record a brand new album for her fans. “Life’s too perfect.” She thought, smiling.

She skipped down to the kitchen, whistling. “somebody’s in a good mood this morning.”
Jessica looked at Nick. “Hey Nick, how’d you sleep last night?”
Nick smiled. “Much better, knowing that you were back. But I have to go to physical therapy at 9:45.”
“I’ll go with ya, is that ok?”
Nick nodded. “I’d prefer that, it’ll make it just a slight bit more bearable. Don’t get me wrong, I like my therapist, but what he makes me do is so painful.”

Jessica fixed them some breakfast, and they went to get dressed for the day. Jessica just put on a white tank top, navy blue sweats, and sneakers. She brushed her hair, put it in two braids and tied a red bandanna around her hair. She put on a little mascara and lip gloss, and called it a day. “This should all right.” She thought.

Jessica came out of her room, finding Nick already ready. “Looks perfect” Nick said. Nick was dressed in a white tank top and black track pants.
“Thanks, you want me to drive?”
Nick nodded “You can if you want.”

They came to the center in about 25 minutes, which gave them 15 minutes before Nick was to start. Nick gave Jessica little tour, then they came what looked like a weight room and a handsome-looking man in his late 30’s was waiting for them. “Hey Nick” the man said. “Who’s this pretty long lady you got with you?”
“this my girlfriend, Jessica. Jess, this is my therapist, Bryan.”
“Nice to meet ya, Jessica.”
“Likewise, Bryan,” she said, shaking his hand.

“ok, you ready to start, Nick?” Bryan asked Nick.
Nick shrugged. “I guess”
They first came to a machine that you push your legs up against the leg thing.
“Ok, why do we do go on this one, even though it’s usually used for weight lifting?” Jessica asked.
“Well Jess, this is used for strength. Nick’s leg would get stronger and help him bear more weight.” Bryan had Nick do a demonstration.
Jessica nodded and watched them work.

The morning was pretty fun. Jessica was curious and asked a lot of questions. Bryan and Nick explained to her how they worked and even let her [arse]ist in few of exercises.

They had just finished a half an hour break, and Bryan said “Now, it’s time for the torture”
Jessica raised her eyebrow quizzically and Nick told her that they were about to do his least favorite exercise.

Nick laid down on his stomach and Bryan told Jessica to watch. Bryan began to push Nick’s lower leg to till it was bending the knee. Nick made a face of pain, but he didn’t say anything.
Nick’s leg dropped, and Bryan asked Jessica if she wanted to try it. “You better not hurt me, Jess.” Nick said.
Jessica smiled. “I won’t, Nick, I’ll be gentle”
Jessica did it just like Bryan had done it the first time.
After that exercise was over, Bryan said to Nick “Now, that wasn’t so bad, was it?”
“ha ha” Nick said sarcastically, letting Jessica help him up. “Really fun.”

Finally, it was time to go home. As they were driving home, Nick said “Well, today was actually fun, since you were there.”
Jessica smiled. “Well, you’ll have me there every day you need to go till Dr. Fitzer considers your leg is healed.” She paused “Speaking of, when’s the last time you’ve seen him?”
Nick thought a minute. “Like 2 or 3 weeks ago. I’m supposed to go back next week sometime. I doubt he’ll think that I’ll be healed by then, though.”
“Hey” Jessica said. “Miracles can happen.”
Nick nodded. “True”

Here's Chapter 12!

~Chapter 12~

The next week was extremely enjoyable for Nick and Jessica. They were hanging around together, glad of having each other back, and knowing that it would all be ok. Yet the worry came up a little when Nick was about to go back to Dr. Fitzer to give a progress report on his leg. Nick was especially nervous, because he was afraid he tell him something he didn’t want to hear, though he didn’t specifically tell Jessica why.

They were laying together on Nick’s bed, and Nick sighed. “What’s wrong Nick?” Jessica asked him.
“I’m just nervous about going to Dr. Fitzer. I don’t think he’ll like what he sees and all the progress I’ve made. I think he had high expectations for me, and I’m afraid I haven’t met those.”
Nick thought back to the doctors appointment he’d gone to a few weeks back. Dr. Fitzer had told him that his lower leg might to be amputated if the damage wasn’t healed. Though he’d said it wasn’t too likely, it still worried Nick. He didn’t want to make such a dramatic change but if Dr. Fitzer thought that was the best thing for him, Nick wouldn’t argue.
“I’m sure you will, stop worrying” Jessica told him.
Nick smiled. “Ok, I will Jess.” They laid their together, just looking in each others eyes for awhile, and then Jessica yawned. “I’m tired, Nick, let’s go to sleep”
“Good idea” Nick said. “We’re probably gonna have a long day tomorrow”
Nick took Jessica in his arms and they fell asleep together

The next day, the two woke up and they got ready for their day. Jessica could see the nervousness in Nick’s eyes and feel it in his touch. She just simply re[arse]ured him that it would be ok, and that Dr. Fitzer would like what he saw. Nick seemed to relax a little, but Jessica could still tell that he was feeling nervous.

Jessica’s cell rang and she answered.

“Hello?”

“Hey hun, it’s Tina”

Jessica smiled at hearing her mom’s voice. “Hey mama, what’s up?”

“Nothing much, what are you doing?”

“Getting ready to go to a doctor’s appointment with Nick”

Tina became concerned. “What are you going there for?”

Jessica explained to her mom what Nick had told her, and how she felt about it.

Tina seemed to relax. “I think it’ll go ok, too. Just keep Nick calm and it’ll all go by. Call me later, ok, hun?”

“I will, mama” said Jessica. “Bye”

They were sitting in the waiting room, when Jessica laid her eyes on a magazine and she picked it up. Flipping through it, Jessica noticed an interesting article.
It was called “Where Are They Now” and Nick and Jess were profiled and it said this:

Whatever happened to the pop power couple Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson? Well, we know that 98 degrees is on extended hiatus, but what about Jessica? Well, since Lachey got in a serious car wreck a few months ago, Jessica has been at his side, helping him recover. Rumors are flying form both camps that Jessica will be jumping back into the studio for her third album in about a month and Nick is thinking of pursuing a solo career of his own. Heck, maybe they’ll sing together again. It would be nice, wouldn’t it?

“It certainly would” Jessica thought to herself as she looked up. She looked at Nick. “You feeling ok, Nick?”
Nick nodded. “I’m just a little nervous, Jess. I try to convince myself that it’ll be ok, but I can’t help but be nervous”
Jessica took his hand and hers and stroked it. They sat like that till they heard:

“Nicholas Lachey?”

They got up, hands laced to together, and followed the nurse down the halls to the exam room.

It was a slightly tense 10 minutes waiting for Dr. Fitzer, but he came in with a big grin on his face. “Hello, how we doing, today?”
“All right” Nick replied. “Dr. Fitzer, I don’t know if you remember her, but this is my girlfriend, Jessica”
“No wonder you looked familiar. How are you doing, Jessica?”
“Just fine, sir” Jessica said smiling as she shook his hand.

After a second, Dr Fitzer said “Well, Nick, how does your physical therapist say you’re doing?”
Nick sighed, thinking “Well, he’s surprised by my progress. He’s told me that when first saw me, he wasn’t too sure if I would fully walk on my own again, but I’d say he’s pleased with the progress I’ve made”
Dr. Fitzer nodded. “That sounds very promising. Well, today we’ll be testing your leg see if it’s fully healed yet. There’s a lot of things that could happen today and I’m sure the both of you are aware of them.”
Nick’s stomach dropped. He was fully aware of all of those.
Jessica showed a confused face, so Dr. Fitzer told her some of the options.
“Now” Dr. Fitzer said “With that all out of the way, let’s go do an MRI on your leg”
Nick gulped. Jessica held his hand, and they went back to MRI room.

The tests and everything seemed to drag along but at the same time go by so fast. Jessica noticed Nick always had that scared and nervous look his face. She couldn’t help but be nervous and scared too. She knew that this could mean big changes, either for the good or the bad. Jessica was hoping for the good, but you would never know.

After Dr. Fitzer left to get all the results, Jessica asked Nick “So, what do you thinks gonna happen?”
Nick shrugged. “I really dunno, Jess. I’m really scared, because I know this could mean I lose my leg, but I’m hopeful because this could mean that I’m officially done with all the recovery process of the accident” Nick looked really emotional.
Jessica walked over to him and they hugged each other, Jessica rubbing his back. “It’s ok, Nick.” Jessica said. “Don’t worry”

A few minutes later, Dr. Fitzer returned, with the biggest grin on his face. “Well, I’m surprised by these results, but I think you will like them.
Nick and Jessica held hands, and Dr. Fitzer opened his folder.
“We declare that you are………à ¢â‚¬Â¦Ã¢â‚¬Â¦Ã¢â‚¬Â

~Chapter 13~

“……⠀¦ officially cured”
Nick’s mouth dropped open. “Oh my god, you got to be kidding me” He said.
Dr. Fitzer shook his head. “No, I’m not, Nick. You’re done, over. Good as new.”
“That is such great news” Jessica said “I’m so happy now”
“I’m happy for you guys. I want to see Nick back here in six months for a check up, but other than that, you’re done with me.”
“Thanks so much for everything, Dr. Fitzer” Jessica said.
“It’s my pleasure. I’ll see you guys later”
After the doctor left, Jessica looked at Nick, who was totally shocked. “It’s over Nick” Jessica said “Your leg’s healed”
Nick nodded. “I’m just so surprised” He then smiled. “I’m gonna go home, call everyone and tell them I’m officially ok.”
Jessica smiled. “Great idea, Nick”
They hugged each other tightly and then left to go back to their house.

The rest of the day was spent calling all the friends and family the good news. Jessica was extremely glad that Nick was in such a good mood considering the scared demeanor he had shown that morning. Jessica was also really excited because now they could have a regular relationship and she didn’t have to worry about him all the time.

A few nights later, Jessica noticed Nick looking over something in his notebook. Jessica sat down next to him and asked, “Watcha doing there, Nick?”
“Looking over a song I wrote” he replied.
“Ooo... can I see?” Jessica asked. She always loved Nick’s songs.
“Sure” Nick handed her his notebook.
Jessica looked over it and said “Looks good. Is this supposed to be a duet?”
Nick nodded. “Yep. I was thinking we could out it on your new album. Do you think it’s good enough for it?”
Jessica smiled. “Yep, I definitely think it could, it just needs a little revising.”

Jessica and Nick spent the next hour looking over it and revising it. After that, they decided to show it to the producer when Jessica started to record her new album the next day.

~Next day~

Jessica and Nick entered the studio, and Sam, the producer, was waiting. “Hey Jess, what you have for us to work on today?”
Jessica handed him the paper Nick written had the duet on, and Sam raised his eyebrows.
“I really like this, I think this will definitely go on the final album. Let’s get started on the back beat and all that”

Sam and Nick produced and worked on it while Jessica watched in amazement. She didn’t know how they know how to work all that equipment, though she lended her hand at it on some parts.

That week that they all spent recording at the studio was one of the best. They had so much fun, and there were a lot of laughs, though they worked hard too. One night they stayed up till about 3:00am, working on it.

Back at the house, Nick asked Jessica “so, Jess, did you like the way our song came out?”
Jessica nodded. “I absolutely loved it! I can’t wait to perform it” She paused. “I’m afraid that no one will like it though”
“Don’t worry, baby” Nick said. “I know they will, because of what such a talent you are”
Jessica blushed “Thanks, Nick” They then kissed.

Here's Ch. 14, y'all! There's only one more chapter! There's a sequel to this but i quit writing it a couple years ago because of a little thing called writers block. But i'll post it if y'all want me to. Enjoy :)

~Chapter 14~

Nick and Jessica launched out their solo careers and they were both hits. It seemed like they didn’t have much time to see each other, with their busy schedules and all that. But, they were on the phone with each other constantly, wondering when the next time they would see each other. But, when they were ready to release their duet, “Together Again By Fate”, as a single, they both knew they would see each other more often.

And, as Nick predicted, the song was an absolute hit. Every radio station in the nation was playing the song and the fans were absolutely loving it. Then, demand began to build to film a video for it.

So, Nick and Jessica filmed the video out in California, at a beach and inside a beautiful rented mansion. They had a lot of fun doing it, and once they saw the final product, they knew it would be a great video.

They were now in New York, and in the TRL studios to premiere the video to the fans.
Jessica was shaking a slight bit because she was nervous, but she knew people would like it.
“You nervous, Jess?” Ken, her hairdresser, asked.
“Slightly” said Jessica. “But it’s ok. I’m gonna have fun. I’m glad to finally be back in the spotlight after being away for so long.”
“I bet everyone will be glad to see Nick so healthy looking after hearing about his accident” Ken commented as he curled Jessica’s hair.
Jessica nodded. “I think Nick’s glad to be healthy and I think he’s hoping everyone will be happy to see him looking so good. I know I am!”
They both laughed.

10 minutes later, Nick came in, looking all ready. “You still there?” Nick asked Jessica in a mock irritated voice.
“Hey, I have to look good” Jessica simply replied.
“I know, Jess, I’m just kidding.” Nick smiled as he sat in a chair near her.
“I’m excited, Nick.” Jessica said. “I can’t wait to show everyone the video.”
“Me too” Nick said. “I’m a little bit scared, though”
“Why?” Jessica asked, looking at him.
“Because, I’m afraid the fans won’t like me as much as they used to.”
“Huh” Jessica said “That’s hogwash. You look just as handsome as you did before that car crash, and I think everyone else will, too”
Nick smiled. “Thanks, babe.”

They were standing outside the studio, when they heard Carson say: “My next two guests have been through a lot. Ever since one has been in a car crash, the other has stayed with them, being faithful. Now, the both of them are back and both are looking good, I must say. Please welcome Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson.”
Fans were clapping and cheering as they entered the studio. Nick and Jessica shook some fans hands and went over to the window to greet the fans outside.

Once they were over with Carson, Carson said “ So, you guys glad to be back?”
“Definitely.” Nick said. “We both are, but I’d say it’s really a good feeling for me, especially since these last few months have pure hell for me”
“Yeah” said Carson. “We heard you had some serious injuries. What were they?”
“I had a slight skull fracture, broken hand, and a broken leg. I’m ok now, though.”
Carson turned to Jessica. “Jessica, was it hard to put with all that went on during Nick’s recovery?”
Jessica nodded. “It was. I’m not gonna go into any details, but it was a hard time though.”
“Ok, I think we’ll turn the question asking to the fans.” Carson pointed to redhead in the audience. “What’s your name and what’s your question for Jessica and Nick?”
“My name is Elaine and my question is for Nick. How long did take you to recover from your injuries?”
Nick thought for a few minutes. “A few months. I can’t remember how many exact, though.”
The next question was from a girl named Vanessa. “I heard you two are doing a concert at Madison Square Garden tomorrow night. Are you excited about that?”
“Definitely.” Jessica said. “It’s gonna be a joint concert, just us. Nick will get to sing some his new stuff, as I will. We will also perform our new song.”
“Do you think you’ll perform “Where You Are” as well?” asked Vanessa.
Nick shrugged. “We really don’t know at this point. We might, we might not. And Jess will probably sneak a song from her past two albums.”
“And we understand that you two have two tickets to give away to that concert” Carson said.
The both of them nodded. “Yes we do” said Nick. “We’ll have four fans compete through a fairly easy game. You kinda have to be a die hard fan to know some of this stuff, though.”
“I’m sure there are plenty of people in this room who think they are” Carson said as he picked them fans to compete.

After the game was done, and the fans were chosen, Carson said. “Now, we have a surprise for Nick and Jessica. We are gonna quiz them to see how well they know each other.”
“Oh boy” said Nick.
“What do we have to do?” Jessica asked.
“Well,” Carson said. “You have to sit in these red chairs” He pointed to the two chairs on the stage “And ask each other question about each other, Like, Jessica would ask a question about her and vice versa. You guys ready?”
They both nodded and sat in the chairs.

“Jessica, you’re first”

Jessica looked down at her cards. “Ok, Nick, you should know this one. What’s my full name?”

“Jessica Ann Simpson” Nick said without missing a beat.

Nick looked down at his cards and asked “OK…. Hopefully this’ll be easy. What is my voice part in 98*?”

“Darn, I get the hard one!” Jessica thought for a minute. “Second… tenor?”

“Ding, ding, ding!” Nick said. “Your turn”

“Nick, what feature on my face do I hate the most?”

Nick thought for a second. “Your eyes. You don’t like the color of them.”

Jessica nodded “Yep, you’re right.”

They ended up getting all the questions about each other right. Carson said “Wow, you two really know each other inside out. It’s kinda scary.”

They finally showed the video, and the fans loved it. As one girl put it “The perfect setting for the perfect romance song. It’s absolutely perfect.”
They stayed behind to sign autographs and talk to fans. They both found that to be completely enjoyable.

As they were driving back to their hotel to get ready for dinner, Jessica turned to Nick. “That was fun. I’m surprised you knew some of those answers.”
Nick smiled. “I surprised myself, too. I didn’t know some of them, so I just guessed on some.”
Jessica’s eyes widened. “You did not.”
Nick nodded sheepishly.
Jessica slapped him playfully. “That’s ok. I didn’t know some of them either. I was like ‘where in the world do they get this obscure stuff’?”
Nick laughed. “Me too”
Jessica couldn’t help but notice that Nick had an uncertain look in his eyes. “Nick, you ok? You a little unsure about something.”
“It’s nothing, Jess, I’m fine” Nick looked out the window.
Jessica sighed. She somehow knew something was on Nick’s mind, but she decided to let it go. “I guess I’ll find out soon.”

Chapter 15

Throughout the night, Jessica still noticed that Nick looked nervous about something. She didn’t dare ask him again though, because she knew he would answer her the same he had this afternoon.

Yet, when they shared a goodnight kiss before retiring to their rooms, Jessica knew that nothing was wrong and everything was gonna be fine. Whatever was bothering Nick, would p[arse] over and be over with.

She called her mom.

“Hello?” Tina said.

“Hey mama, what are you doing?” Jessica asked.

“oh nothing. Just getting things ready for tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow?” Jessica asked. “What’s happening then?”

“Just this thing I have to go to. I can’t really get out of it” Tina paused. “So, are you excited about tomorrow night?”

“Yeah, I am” Jessica said. “It’ll be a new experience for the both of us, since we haven’t performed together in a full concert before”

“Who’s going first?”

“Nick is. He don’t really mind about that. I’ve heard the new material and it’s great.”

“Who’s coming?”

Jessica thought for a second. “Cate and of the other Lachey family members, Justin and Jeff, and Drew too.”

“Nobody will be there for you, though, right?” Tina asked.

Jessica nodded. “I feel a little left out, but that’s ok.” She paused. “Nick was feeling a little uneasy tonight, though. I don’t know why.”

“I’m sure it’s nothing. He’ll take care of it.”

“Ok, I won’t worry about it” Jessica said.

They talked for a little while longer and hung up.

Jessica went to bed that night feeling relaxed and ready for the next day. “It’ll definitely be a busy one too.” Jessica thought. “We’ll have a million things to do.”
She hit the pillow and was totally out of it.

*~* The next morning *~*

Jessica woke up and looked over to her clock. 10:15! “My gosh, I need to meet Nick in 15 minutes!” she thought.
She hurriedly got dressed, did her hair and make up and was practically running down to the hotel lobby.
She got there, seeing that Nick was already there and looked slightly annoyed. He raised his eyebrows. “Jess, no offence, but you look like a mess.”
“I slept in this morning” Jessica said with a little crossness in her voice. “What do you expect?”
Nick didn’t answer, he just gave her a kiss and they walked to the limo hand-in-hand.

They next 4 hours flew by. They had to give interviews, and go a business thing that was extremely boring. Finally, they were given a half hour lunch.
They were eating, when Nick asked Jessica “You nervous about tonight, baby?”
Jessica nodded. “I know it’ll go well, though, because we got such great reception with the last duet, why shouldn’t it not go well this time?”
“True” said Nick “Things could go wrong, though”
Jessica knew he was being uneasy again. “There you go, you’re being uneasy and pessimistic again.”
Nick rolled his eyes “I’ll take care of it”

The next few hours went by and finally it was time to get ready. Jessica put on her clothes, and was sitting in her make up chair, having her hair dresser, Ken, do her hair.
“You nervous, Jessie?” Ken asked her.
Jessica shook her head. “Not too much. I’m just excited to see what will happen. I hope that everyone will love it.”
“I think they will” Ken said. “Because they know what a talent you are”
Jessica blushed “Thanks, Ken”
“No problem” He replied. “Because you and I both know it’s true”

Jessica was fully ready and sitting in her chair, when she heard a knock on her door. “Come in.” she said.
Nick came in, and Jessica smiled. “Hey Nick, you ready to take the stage?”
Nick nodded, walking up to her. “Yep. I thought I’d stop by and see you first, though.”
He sighed. “I’m nervous, though”
“Don’t be Nick” Jessica told him. “I’m sure you will be wonderful.”
Nick smiled. “Thanks, babe”
“No problem” They kissed, and Nick left to get on the stage.

Jessica stood backstage and watched Nick perform. She thought he rocked the stage and he looked as healthy as ever. You couldn’t really tell Nick had been in the car accident.

Jessica did her set, and performed some of her new stuff from her new album. She also sang “I Wanna Love You Forever”, “Your Faith In Me”, “A Little Bit” and “Where You Are” with Nick.

They had just finished “Where You Are”, and it was finally time for them to perform their new song “Together Again By Fate”. Jessica and Nick were standing on the stage, and Nick asked the crowd “You having fun, New York?”
The full house roared and screamed in applause.
“That’s what I like to hear” Nick said. “Before we sing our new song, I’d like to do something that’s… not really in the program.”
“And what would that be?” asked Jessica.
“Well, I wouldn’t normally do this, but… I can’t really think of any better place to do it” He turned to Jessica. “Jessica, we have been to hell and back in these last few months. But yet, we survived it, even though I wasn’t sure we would. But this experience made me realize that if we can survive this, we can survive anything.”
Jessica’s eyes filled up with tears even though she was a little unsure of what Nick was doing.
Nick then got down on one knee, a ring in his hand, “And this I want to know form you. Jessica Ann Simpson, will you marry me?”
The fans were screaming and Jessica was almost crying. “Oh my gosh! Yes, I will, Nicholas Scott Lachey”
Nick smiled, and placed the ring on Jessica’s finger. They then hugged.
Jessica moved her hand from side to side, so the adoring fans could see her ring. “I’m engaged!” She exclaimed in an excited voice.
Everyone was clapping and shouting “Congratulations!”

After that, Jessica, still shocked, began to sing the first lines of the new song by herself:

Everything was perfect
Our relationship seemed to be intact
But when we grew apart
I didn’t know where or how to start
Another life without you

But this must be destiny
That you and I are meant to be
Cause it seems to fall in place
For us

Then she sang the first chorus:

Just then, Nick came back up on the stage, singing:

I’m so glad that we have found each other again
I thought we could survive apart
But it appears we can not.

They sang the chorus together, hugging each other close.

That I’m meant to be with you

Then they came to the voice part:

Jessica sang:

Then Nick sang:

Then they both sang:

They sang the end chorus two times, then the ending came.

(Jessica) It seems that

By Fate

They finished the song with a hug and kiss. Fans clapped and cheered. From the whole atmosphere, a lot of love was going to their engagement.
They bowed, and shouted, “We love you, New York!”

*~* After the show *~*

They were in Nick’s dressing room, and Jessica was sitting on Nick’s lap.
“So, did you have fun tonight, Jess?” Nick asked her.
Jessica nodded, looking at her ring. “I can’t believe I’m engaged. Why did you decide to propose to me in such a public way?”
“Well as you know, I don’t like to be too public with my private life.” Nick began “But, In figured, since we were singing our new song, and we were around our fans, I thought it would be perfect, since the song we were about to sing described our relationship perfectly, and the fans could get in on our relationship.”
“Makes sense” said Jessica. “So is that why you have been so uneasy the last 2 days?”
Nick smiled. “Yep. But, you know something, Jess?”
“What?” Jessica asked.
“It seems like you and I have been brought back together by fate. You came back to me when I was in the accident, and I didn’t expect you too. You came back after our fight, and I didn’t think you would. I guess we are meant to be.”
Jessica nodded.
They kissed, and then they both knew. It was all perfect and nothing could get in the way of their love.
